Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Amanda C of Dorchester

Amanda C shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Amanda, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me at Flexery Beauty in Boston is always a mix of creativity, client work, and brand building. I’ve been here for seven years, and in that time, my days have blended into a rhythm of balancing clients, projects, and content creation.
I usually start my mornings with skincare—because if a makeup artist doesn’t take skin seriously, that’s a red flag. Skincare is everything. After my own prep (hair, skin, all the womanly self-care we do), I head to my studio. From there, it’s either checking in with clients, sending out appointment reminders, or working on brand visuals. I’m big on brows, so I always remind clients to come in with freshly waxed brows—it makes a huge difference.
If I’m not talking to clients, I’m checking in with my models. I currently have four that I absolutely adore, and honestly, without them, I don’t know where my brand would be. Most started as clients and grew into much more—they’re the faces that bring my vision to life.
Riah (@riahcash_): I met her when she was turning 18, but she’s been walking runways since she was six or seven. She has such a gorgeous face and an incredible work ethic. Her mom is also my client, so it’s really a full-circle connection. Even though she’s younger than me, she inspires me to stay sharp.
Trendy (@trendykendi): We’ve worked together for 3–4 years now. I met her at a fashion show, and her energy is unmatched. I’m never shy to pitch a model if I see potential—sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but Trendy definitely was a win.
Rania (@itsraniam): Another beauty who started as my client. She has such a strong presence and photographs like a dream—I use her often for my visuals.
I’m also lucky to have a solid photographer on my team. My shoots, creative direction, and brand visuals wouldn’t be possible without that partnership. At the very least, I’m grateful to have my brand ambassador, Stephanie. @stunningstef__ She’s not only an incredible upcoming model, ambassador, and influencer, but also someone I first met as a client—where sparks immediately flew. Since then, she’s become apart of my journey. Stephanie consistently brings in amazing results, and I love using her in the photos that represent my makeup artistry. Having strong images with your models is so important—whether it’s polished editorial looks or clean, timeless makeup—and that’s exactly where Stephanie shines.
What makes her even more special is that she’s a dedicated mom. I truly admire how she makes time, often stepping away from her responsibilities at home to shoot with me. Sometimes she even brings her kids along, which honestly makes the experience even richer. While I’m not a mom myself, I value family ,loyalty deeply, and I love that my work allows me to connect with clients and friends who support me . Stephanie embodies that balance of beauty, professionalism, and heart, and I’m thankful to have her.

Every day looks different, but it’s always rewarding. Whether I’m behind the brush, planning shoots, or developing my cosmetic line, I’m proud of what I’ve built. Seven years in, Flexery Beauty has grown into not just a brand, but a community—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Amanda C , the powerhouse behind Flexery Beauty. With over 10 years as a makeup artist and seven years leading my brand, Amanda has been steadily guiding Flexery to the top—because that’s exactly where it’s going. What makes Flexery Beauty special isn’t just the artistry, it’s the mission: reminding women that they were already beautiful before any brush, blend, or enhancement.
I pours into women daily, empowering them to know that they are her—unshakable, radiant, and confident—no matter what anyone says. Beauty has no limits. You can be green, purple, yellow, blue, or red—it doesn’t matter. You are her, always.
As an African-American and Haitian woman, Amanda is proud to represent her roots in an industry where representation is vital. FlxeryBeauty is more than cosmetics—it’s a reflection of culture, confidence, and community. Through her work, I am creating space for other Black and Haitian artists while showing women everywhere that true beauty starts from within.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I didn’t know who I was . I was scared, shy, timid — vulnerable and living in a very dark place. I honestly thought my story would end in tragedy; bullying convinced me I didn’t deserve to be here. As someone with an ugly past , I never could have imagined, not in a million years, that I’d be where I am today.
Now I’m a makeup artist with a name in Boston — and that respect didn’t come easy. There are pros and cons, but the wins always outweigh the setbacks. I don’t have time for negativity or envy; we’re all walking the same journey in different shoes, and I choose to stay focused and rise. Call it winning, thriving, or simply surviving — whatever the word, I’m here, I’m proud, and I refuse to let the past define me.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Everyone wants to be the boss. Everyone wants the title, the recognition, the success. But what most people don’t want is the suffering that comes before it—the long nights, the sacrifices, the hand work, the footwork, the moments where you wonder if it’s even worth it.
When I first started as a makeup artist, I was broke. I literally had nothing. I didn’t know how I was going to buy products for clients, let alone how I was going to build a brand. Every dollar I made—whether it was $4 or $20—had to stretch between bills, survival, and investing back into my craft. I couldn’t keep asking my parents for help. They had already given me everything they could: money to start, and their home as my first workspace.
For three years, my living room was my studio. Then, after my sister passed, my mom turned her old room into what became my first official makeup space. That room held memories and pain, but also transformation—it was the place where my craft grew, where clients came, and where I started to see the vision take shape.
But before the wins, there was a lot of losing. And it’s in those losses, in that suffering, where I learned the lessons that truly prepared me for success. Struggle taught me money management. It taught me how to scale, how to price my services, how to value myself so others would value me too. It taught me discipline, gratitude, and resilience.
Success isn’t just about the reward—it’s about the survival that makes you ready to handle the reward. And that’s what separates the dreamers from the doers: being willing to suffer for the vision until the vision starts paying you back.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
In the beginning of my makeup career, the version of me that the public saw wasn’t the real me. It was a façade. I was scared—scared to lose clients, scared to speak too loudly, scared to be myself. I didn’t want to be labeled as “ghetto” or “unprofessional,” so I hid behind a polished version of myself that didn’t show the full truth.
For a long time, my clients didn’t even know who I was. They barely knew what I looked like. Their judgments of me were built on the faces I created for others, not on my own identity. That was never the narrative I wanted for my brand—or for myself.
As my artistry grew stronger, I started growing stronger within myself. First, I let my hands speak for me. Then, slowly, I began letting people hear my voice. Eventually, I showed my face, even though insecurities from my younger years made me hesitant. Being a makeup artist gave me the confidence to reveal more of who I truly am—not just as an artist, but as a woman.
Now, I walk into rooms fully myself. I show up at business events, I speak, I connect, and I own my space. My personality is strong and direct, and instead of hiding it, I’ve learned to embrace it. That’s what makes me a powerful businesswoman—I can walk into any room and claim it.
Looking back, the girl who once hid out of fear wouldn’t believe what I’m doing now. I’ve learned that while I pour into other women to remind them of their power, I’ve been pouring into myself too. I’ve built my own confidence, I’ve learned my own strength, and I’ve reminded myself that no matter how the world sees me, I am still going to win. And yes—when people know who you are and what you look like, it only makes that win even greater.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If immortality were real, what would you build?
If i lived forever, I would have infinite time to perfect my craft, push boundaries, and to reinvent beauty over centuries. I wouldn’t just create looks for trends—l would document the entire evolution of beauty, leaving behind archives that show how cultures, styles, and identities changed through time.I would build: A timeless empire that becomes more than makeup—it’s history, culture, and art all preserved through my hands.
A museum of beauty, filled with faces, stories, and transformations that showcase how makeup defined eras.
A universal standard of confidence, reminding people across generations that beauty is not about chasing perfection, but embracing identity.
Representation that never dies, using my everlasting platform to ensure voices from underrepresented communities—Black, Haitian, autistic, and beyond—are always seen and celebrated.
Immortality would mean I don’t just touch faces for a season; they touch humanity for eternity.
