Meet Jonathan Solorio

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan Solorio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a hurdle that many individuals face, regardless of their age or profession. As a young event photographer, I too grappled with feelings of self-doubt. However, through self-reflection and a shift in perspective, I was able to overcome imposter syndrome and find confidence in my craft. One of the most significant steps I took on my journey was acknowledging that imposter syndrome is a common phenomenon experienced by numerous professionals. Surrounding myself with experienced photographers and creative individuals who have faced similar challenges provided invaluable insights and encouragement. Engaging in conversations, asking for advice, and sharing experiences not only gave me practical guidance but also reassured me that I was not alone in my journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a photographer based in San Diego. Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I have photographed everything from high school sports to weddings, to everyday street photography. I love capturing memories for people, as well as making others laugh! Jsolovisuals was started back when I was in high school, turning my hobby into a business and allowing me to pursue my passion professionally. Through Jsolovisuals, I strive to create visually stunning and captivating images that tell a unique story. In addition to portrait photography, I have now expanded jsolovisuals to include; videography, and photo booth rentals. I am grateful for the opportunities and growth that I have experienced along this journey, and I am excited to continue capturing memories, making people laugh, and pushing the boundaries of my art.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As I look back, the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey were creativity, technical proficiency, and building strong relationships. My advice for beginners is to invest time in learning the technical aspects of photography through online tutorials, workshops, or even informal videos found on Youtube. Photography is an art form, and cultivating creativity and having a unique vision is essential, so it is important to find your own voice within your camera.

For those just starting, remember photography is a journey of growth and self-discovery. Embrace the challenges, learn from your mistakes, and never stop pursuing your passion. Be patient, persistent, and always strive for improvement. With dedication and a commitment to learning and honing your craft, you can achieve great things in the world of photography.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One of my favorite books is “Option B” by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. It gives the perfect blend of personal experiences, psychological insights, and practical advice for coping with adversity and building resilience no matter the situation. The importance of self-compassion: The book emphasizes the need to be kind to ourselves when we face difficult situations. Often, we tend to be our harshest critics during tough times, but practicing self-compassion helps us navigate challenges with greater ease and understanding. Moreover, Option B stresses the significance of having a support system during challenging times. Surrounding ourselves with caring and understanding individuals which can provide comfort, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. As a whole, Option B taught me that life can throw unexpected challenges our way, but we have the power to respond with strength, courage, and resilience.
