We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jake and Jenny. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jake and Jenny below.
Jake and Jenny, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
There are so many moments in the music business where you do feel like an imposter. You don’t belong, that there are so many others who are so much better than you. But, in the end, we wouldn’t be in that room if we weren’t capable of it because no one in the music industry blows smoke just to blow it. There’s a million talented acts out there and if you’re not good enough they will just pass you by. So if you’re in the room, it’s because you’re good enough to be there.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are a country duo that is making a name for ourselves with a brand of ciuntey music with an edge- kind of a “Nor’easter country” where it just comes in by storm. Being from the northeast where country music isn’t native we are giving it our own spin with our own influences. As you can hear in our two Nashville recorded tracks “Wine and Whiskey” and “Across This Bar” we are adding our own flare and it’s different than what anyone else is doing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First off is taking time to establish who you are and what you want to accomplish. Being the same as everyone else out there won’t result in a whole heck of a lot. Secondly be truly excellent at your craft. Originality is good but it’s important to really hone in on the craft and get better by exposing yourself to working with people who are better than you. Which leads us to three- be humble and know that you definitely do not know it all. There is so much to learn from others in every situation, everything you do is an opportunity to learn and grow. Surrounding yourself with people who are better than you is the best way to get better yourself.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are always looking for people who can help us sharpen our songwriting skills! Songwriting is such an art and collaboration brings so much to that process. Writing in a vacuum is tough so finding people you can jive with creatively is important.
