We recently connected with James Turner and have shared our conversation below.
James, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I can’t exactly pinpoint where I got my sense of resilience from, but I can say that I have had the ability to bounce back and recover from trying situations from day one it seems.
I can remember back to my early ages of having the mindset and determination to not lose no matter the hand I was dealt or how much the odds appeared to be stacked up against me.
I was raised with the attitude of, if there’s a will there’s a way and nothing beats a failure but a try. I don’t think resilience is something that can be taught. It has to be in you and you have to have the strength to push through and the determination to try again when something knocks you down.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At the present moment I’m wearing a lot of hats because, I’m trying to accomplish a lot of things. Right now I’m really working hard to gain traction with my YouTube channel Hankin TV.
The definition of Hankin is, when you can supply the demand and consistently turn a profit. So no matter what you are doing, if you are supplying a demand and consistently turning a profit you are hankin.
Hankin TV is a platform I created to shine a spotlight on artist, businesses, and brands that people maybe missing. I want to see everyone win so I wanted to create a platform that brings like minded people together to network and to let them see someone does see what they are doing.
I am the author of the Urban Fiction Novel Hanking In Love With The Game which is a story of ups and downs, good and bads, and a story where the main character definitely displays resilience and is going to have to pass that same resilience down to his son.
I also have the Hankin Merch Line where people can purchase a copy of the book as well as the Hankin definition T shirt, the Hankin TV logo t shirt along with hoodies, sweat shirts, stickers, coffee cups, and more.
I’m planning to add a new design every month and there are discounts and other perks available.
I will be launching a new series as well on the Hankin TV Youtube Channel called Tales From The Cell where I will be telling some of the things I experienced spending 15 years in prison, doing 10 of those years straight. The series will also feature men and women who have also done time in prison, who got out and changed their lives. I have a lot of great content planned for Hankin TV.
The sequel to Hankin In Love With The Game is also on the list of upcoming things coming from the Hankin brand. It is well overdue and the readers have been asking for it. Don’t worry I’m surely going to deliver to them a great story. The sequel was delayed because, I decided I wanted to more with the hankin brand so I enrolled in and finished a Bachelors Course in Digital Cinematography to gain the knowledge and skills to create quality visual content rather it be short and or full length films, commercials, promo videos, or content for YouTube.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey I think patience and really focusing on the fact that things does not happen overnight has been very impactful because, that is how I manage to keep going when things seem like they are not working, my brand and movement is not growing, or even when I fell stagnated.
Another quality that is most definitely a must is, time management. When I don’t manage my time wisely I find myself all over the place, doing a lot but at the time not getting anything done. I have found to do lists to be very helpful and they help me to stay on task rather than being all over the place so I think to do lists go hand in hand with time management. A lot of times we lack in time management is, because we don’t keep track of exactly what we are supposed to be doing. It feels good when you see things getting checked off of your to do list and it holds you accountable to what you are supposed to be doing.
Perseverance is the third quality that is also important and impactful in my journey. no matter what we are doing we have to have the strength to overcome and bounce back from obstacles and adversities that we will face during our journey. Perseverance also instills the will to not give up. So these are the three qualities that I think are and have been impactful in my present and past endeavors.
The advice I have for people who are early in their journey is, never give up, be patient, and believe in yourself.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always on the lookout for people to collaborate with because I am a firm believer in each one teach one. The right hand washes the left hand but they both wash the face meaning it can be hard to sometimes get things done without a great team.
I also don’t mind to collaborate because it exposes all involved to a new audience and we can learn from one another. I like to collaborate with like minded people who are looking to grow and expand their brand and who don’t mind to dim their light to allow someone else’s to shine.
It’s not always about a dollar and I don’t mind getting mine on the back end. It’s not always about how many people see your work, but who sees your work.
Although I wear many hats and do a lot of things myself. I don’t mind collaborating and working with others.
Anyone looking to collaborate or promote their brand can hit me up at Hankin TV on all platforms
