We were lucky to catch up with Emmeline Wang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emmeline, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is developed when adversity or challenges hit. Growing up, I developed strength through playing sports. I played travel softball and started at 14 years old, much later than most girls who aspired to continue the sport in college. Due to my realized talent by coaches, I was always placed on teams above my age bracket, and usually being the youngest on the team, I was often bullied or belittled for my abilities. I felt like an underdog and always had more to prove.
It’s translated into my adulthood, where I’ve developed a mindset to always see through adversity and “embrace the struggle” so that when the lows hit, I know I’m that much closer to things going back up. Lastly, I’ve adopted an ethos that it’s never about what happens to you, but rather how you adapt to the situation that makes the experience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a Social Media Manager by day, creation is an essential part of my life. I enjoy content creation and have had the opportunity to work with brands as an ambassador, model, and content creator, Find out more about my at emmelinewang.com where you can check out my body of freelance work as a model and writer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, determination, and gregariousness
Resilience can be developed through adversity and how you choose to allow a situation to either harden or soften your demeanor toward future challenges.
Determination can be developed through feeling inspired by something that pushes you in the direction of your dreams.
Gregariousness — start young! Throughout life, I’ve always felt that the key to life is knowing how to treat people with openness, sincerity, and kindness.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My mother has immensely been a key figure in helping me develop a mindset to overcome anything in life. When I was in high school, I almost lost my mother to a tragic car accident, and through witnessing her resilience and strength during her recovery, I knew that anything was possible.
