We were lucky to catch up with Jay Richie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
In short, it feels as if my purpose found me honestly. Ever since I was as young as I could remember, media in the form of music and visuals has always been appealing to me. My purpose is following and pursuing what makes me happy. Media has always been a safe haven and an escape.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Jay Richie, artist and entrepreneur. I love to express myself through two media forms; music and visuals.
As an artist I am building a personal brand ‘Jay Richie’ which is a platform for my own music and merchandise. As an entrepreneur I am a business owner of Raw and Refined Visuals, LLC. Which is a media firm I founded and have been building where I specialize in portraiture and short film catering to artists, creatives and business owners.
What is most exciting about pursuing a career in media is that it is my passion. To me it is so cool and I feel so blessed to be doing what I love every day. Pursuing a career in media arts is something I’ve been interested in and working towards I’d say since the early age of 4. I always knew that this is something I wanted to do, so the fact that I am in the position I am in today is truly special to me!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back three qualities that have been most impactful would be passion, patience and resilience.
My advice for those who are early in their journey and looking to develop those qualities is to first follow your passion. Especially if you are following in my footsteps and taking the entrepreneur route. It is not an easy route to take so I always stress the importance of starting something you are passionate about because it is going to be your passion to keep you going when all the odds are against you.
That ties into my second quality; patience. This is a moment where I have to take my own advice honestly. Pursuing a career in media as an entrepreneur is definitely something that can be time consuming and feel like a rollercoaster. One minute things are moving, the next it feels like slow motion.
My third quality is resilience. I like to think of myself as someone who can take a lot. I feel like I have always been the type of person to fall down and get right back up in life. However, as a full time entrepreneur you will be faced with a different set of challenges that most don’t talk much about in life. So if you are thinking about pursuing whatever it is as an entrepreneur, please be prepared to be resilient and learn to look at things as a lesson not a loss.
Lastly, as a skill or area of knowledge I always advise remain a student in life! That is one piece of advice that will always stick with me! Keep improving, keep investing in yourself and your craft!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for new faces and personalities to work with. I am looking to connect with more artists and creative such as models, recording artists and business owners like myself. After niching down I figured that is my target audience. It only makes sense as those are the type of people I love to be around and highlight. It’s a bonus because I know what it’s like to be on both sides of the camera considering I pursue music and have an interest in fashion myself. Their energy excites and moves me the most though, when I’m doing media for creatives and artists the energy is always so high.
