We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madame X. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madame below.
Madame, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
That’s an awesome question, for me; it’s less about being effective and more about remaining true to myself. I have found myself in rooms feeling as if i was unqualified, not good enough, or doing too much (in the sense of overcompensating and moving from a place of fear). I would move with arrogance so that people wouldn’t see that I was scared and felt like I was undeserving to be there. A shift didn’t happen until I was listening to a podcast and a woman was speaking about not feeling good enough to be in certain rooms, she spoke about how she shifted her mindset from “I don’t belong in this space” to “this space is in need of something and I have the opportunity to provide”. I think we (society) operate from a space of take rather than a place of service. I’m challenging myself to be more consistent with showing up from a space of service rather than a place of insecurity. When I walk into a space where no one looks like me, it gives me more confidence because I understand that I have something that no one else does. Whether that be a different perspective, a service, a smile. Something different that makes me; me. Those who are supposed to see it will; and those who aren’t won’t.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Currently my focus has been on performing and sharpening my skills. I recently moved to NYC and have been so inspired by the incredible talent in New York. It’s challenged me to push my craft to the next level whether that is expanding my vocal range, trying my production skills in a new genre, or collaborating with others within my songwriting skills. I’m also in school studying software engineer, which has been a challenge all on its own. Learning how to code is like learning a new language. It feels good to know that I’m using a different part of my brain while also finding balance creatively. I have new music available on streaming platforms and am currently working on new music. So be on the lookout for new music!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity, Resilience, Integrity. I was often told to know who I am, which is important to have that foundation. I also believe its important to be curious about yourself. Question why you do the things you do, why you are in the genre you’re in, have you ever thought of trying something different? And that doesn’t pertain to just music, be curious about life. I believe theres a beautiful wonder that comes with trying new things as well as wisdom. Resilience: Anything you choose to pursue with your whole heart will require you to grow some thick skin in some way. Simply because, there will be challenges and obstacles that you will face however, how bad do you want it? Are you willing to persevere? There’s joy in enduring hardship and being proud of yourself.
Finally, something that I’m still growing in. Integrity: Be honest with yourself about what you want, and how far are you willing to go in order to achieve it? It’s ok to realize that what you thought you wanted; you don’t want anymore. However moving away from your authentic self n order to please others doesn’t help anyone. And you end up feeling crappy about yourself… which is doodoo. It’s cliché, however true. Trust the process, just because it doesn’t look promising doesn’t mean give up, keep going. Surround yourself with people who genuinely love you and will call you out on your bs! It’s important to check yourself and have a circle that keeps you grounded.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The greatest area of growth and improvement in my life has been my mindset. Realizing that I’m the only one holding myself back has been a continuous challenge. However, the liberation that comes with knocking down barriers and walls for myself is so empowering. From packing up and moving to a whole new state, not knowing a single soul. To putting myself out there and doing things that I’ve only thought about and written down. It’s one thing to write out your desires, its another thing to act on your desires and go for it! As well as collaborating with other artists, producers, businesses that are aligned with my values.
