We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Staci Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Staci, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
In a world that often values conformity, being the only one in the room who looks like you can be a daunting experience. As a 55-year-old black woman raised in a single-parent household and educated in Catholic schools, I’ve often found myself in such situations. This article is a reflection on my journey and the strategies I’ve developed to navigate these spaces successfully.
My Background
Growing Up in a Single-Parent Household
I was raised by a strong, independent mother who instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and self-reliance. Despite the challenges that came with being a single parent, she ensured that I had a solid foundation to build my life upon.
The Influence of Catholic School
From second grade through high school, I attended Catholic schools. These institutions, particularly my all-girls high school, played a significant role in shaping my worldview and personal values. They taught me the importance of discipline, respect, and faith in overcoming life’s challenges.
The Challenge of Being Different
The Struggles of Being a Black Female in Predominantly White Spaces
Being a black woman in predominantly white spaces has often meant dealing with stereotypes and biases. I’ve had to work twice as hard to prove my worth and competence.
Overcoming Stereotypes
I’ve learned to challenge stereotypes by demonstrating my abilities and asserting my worth. I’ve shown that I am not defined by societal prejudices but by my skills, talents, and character.
The Power of Representation
Being the only one in the room who looks like me has underscored the importance of representation. It’s a reminder that my presence can challenge perceptions and inspire others who share my experiences.
Strategies for Success
Building Confidence
Embracing Individuality
I’ve learned to embrace my individuality and use it as a strength. My unique experiences and perspectives have often provided fresh insights and innovative solutions in various settings.
Cultivating Resilience
Resilience has been a key factor in my success. I’ve learned to view challenges as opportunities for growth and to bounce back from setbacks with renewed determination.
Creating a Support Network
Seeking Mentors
Mentorship has been invaluable in my journey. Mentors have provided guidance, encouragement, and insights that have helped me navigate unfamiliar terrains.
Building Community
Building a community of like-minded individuals has provided a sense of belonging and support. These relationships have been a source of strength and inspiration.
Conclusion
The Journey Continues
My journey is far from over. Each day presents new opportunities for growth and learning. I continue to navigate spaces where I am the only one who looks like me, armed with the lessons I’ve learned and the strategies I’ve developed.
Lessons Learned
The lessons I’ve learned have shaped me into the person I am today. They’ve taught me the value of resilience, the power of representation, and the importance of embracing one’s individuality.
Looking Ahead
As I look ahead, I am filled with hope and determination. I am committed to continuing to break barriers and inspire others who may find themselves being the only one in the room.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

_____
As the Visionary, I lend belief to those that don’t have it until they can own it themselves. And as a visionary, my role extends beyond simply dreaming big and charting the course for the future. It involves instilling belief in those who may not yet see the potential that lies ahead. It’s about fostering an environment of trust and optimism, where every individual feels empowered to contribute their unique talents and perspectives towards our shared goals.
There are times when doubt and uncertainty can cloud our vision. In these moments, it’s my responsibility to serve as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path forward. I lend my belief to those who are struggling to find their own, acting as a source of inspiration and motivation. I share my conviction in our collective potential, reinforcing the idea that together, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve extraordinary things.
This process is not about imposing my vision on others, but rather about helping them discover their own capacity for belief. It’s about nurturing their confidence until they can fully own their faith in our shared vision. This belief then becomes a powerful driving force that propels us forward, transforming our grandest dreams into reality.
Being a visionary is not just about seeing what others can’t; it’s about inspiring others to see it too. It’s about lending belief until they can stand firm in their own conviction. Because when everyone believes in the vision, that’s when true magic happens.

In a world where many women are still struggling to be heard, I have taken it upon myself to be a voice for those who feel voiceless. I speak for those who, for various reasons, may not yet have found the strength or the platform to express their thoughts, their feelings, their dreams, and their rights.
I am an advocate, a champion, a spokesperson for women who are yet to realize that they too have a voice that deserves to be heard. I share their stories, their struggles, their triumphs, and their aspirations, amplifying their silent whispers into powerful declarations.
However, my role is not to speak for women indefinitely. It is to help them discover the wisdom to recognize that they too have a voice, and that this voice matters. It’s about empowering them to speak up for themselves, to express their own truths, and to contribute their unique perspectives to the world.
I strive to create a space where every woman feels safe and encouraged to speak her mind, to share her experiences, and to assert her rights. I lend my voice until they find their own, until they have the wisdom to understand that their voice is powerful, valuable, and absolutely necessary.
Because every woman deserves to be heard. Every woman has a voice. And I am here to ensure that this voice does not remain silent.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience has been crucial in overcoming obstacles and setbacks. It’s the ability to keep going, to persist in the face of adversity, and to maintain a positive outlook even when things don’t go as planned.
Adaptability, the capacity to adjust to new conditions and embrace change, has been instrumental in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of life and work. It’s about being flexible, open-minded, and ready to pivot when necessary.
Lastly, continuous learning has been key. The world is constantly changing, and staying updated with new knowledge and skills is essential. It’s about having a growth mindset, being curious, and always seeking to improve and evolve.
These qualities have not only shaped the journey but also laid a strong foundation for future growth and success.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I used to give everyone else the credit, but now I give myself more credit. It means that I am in better control of my own destiny. And these are my recommendations based on experience.
Resilience: Cultivate a positive mindset and practice emotional intelligence. Understand that setbacks are a part of life and often serve as stepping stones to success. Regularly engage in activities that reduce stress and promote well-being, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies. Surround yourself with a supportive network of individuals who can provide encouragement during challenging times.
Adaptability: Stay open to new ideas and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat. Regularly reassess your goals and strategies to ensure they align with changing circumstances. Practice flexibility in your thinking and actions, and be ready to pivot when necessary.
Continuous Learning: Adopt a growth mindset and view every experience as a learning opportunity. Invest time in expanding your knowledge and skills through reading, online courses, workshops, or mentoring. Stay curious and ask questions. Keep up with trends and developments in your field to ensure your skills remain relevant.
