Meet Lindsay Cochrane

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Cochrane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lindsay, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
There’s actually not an easy answer to this question because I do believe that it varies from person to person but my story is I actually worked in the restaurant industry for a long time since I was 15 I was a hostess than a server than a bartender but really when I started bartending you know you see a lot of different people from a lot of different walks of life some that want to talk to you all day long someone she did not talk to them in and you learn how to read peoples energy basically and communicate to them that way and then I took those lessons in that knowledge and I applied it when I started working and Radio and it really helped me because a lot of times and Radio I’m just sitting in one room even though I’m talking to thousands of people at one time I’m in a room by myself talking to a microphone so taking that knowledge from actually being behind the bar and having a different person in front of me at any given time and having to learn how to communicate to them and the way they communicate really taught me how to communicate to different styles of people in an effective way

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
So I have a syndicated radio show it is called life with Lindsay yes it’s on country radio stations but it is legitimately about my life and my perspective on things and I’m 16 years in the radio business I have been doing life with Lindsay for five years this year which is crazy to even think and I’ve had such an amazing journey with ups and downs to get to my syndicated show that’s in 10 markets currently, and but it hasn’t been the easiest I’ve lived in eight states in 10 years by myself no friends no boyfriend and having to move every two years which is not the easiest thing to do but I followed my dream and my dream is to have a show with two females and one male which I’m still currently working on and that’s why I’ve created a new podcast called be on the stage here in Nashville because life with Lindsey is just me and it’s doing very well and I love doing it but I want to expand and do more of a personality based show, so even though I’m 16 years end and I’ve had success I’m still fighting for that dream I’m still trying to build that and I’m only saying that and telling that part of the story because I want to inspire people they’re still struggling to accomplish their dream and and when I say struggling I don’t mean that you haven’t had success in another area of your life or maybe another career and you’ve made money and have all the things but you’re still chasing that one thing and I want everyone to know no matter What your story is how old you are where you live etc. it is never too late to keep pursuing your dreams keep the dream alive and I’m not gonna lie sometimes that’s hard to do my advice to you is remember why you started it in the first place remember that passion that fire you have inside of you and sometimes it takes maybe you have to step away from it maybe need to go meditate whatever works for you but remember why you started and that’s how I’ve gotten through a lot of in my career to keep focusing and still trying to build at Dreem after 16 years in the Radio business and having success

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
This is a hard question because narrowing it down to three skills is kind of hard for me but because I have to for this question I would say the three skills you have to have are the ability to listen the ability to not take things personally and resilience. You have to have the ability to listen and take advice from whoever you get mentored by or other people in the industry but you also have to be able to discern that information as well because some people will give you information that will lead you Down the wrong path so you have to use your intuition to know the difference and learn quickly and whatever industry you’re in you can’t take things personally and you are going through it first I mean I I still do at times but I have to remind myself it’s not personal it’s just business even when your brand is you like me so it’s hard not to take it personal sometimes because it’s your dream and your passion you sweat and tears but you have to learn don’t take things personally and resilience because there’s gonna be a lot of nose but once you learn resilience and you get told no it doesn’t bother you it’s like whatever so am I advice to you is really all this comes with experience so when you first go through it and you’re resisting and you’re upset because you’re taking it personal or you’re not listening that’s OK to really because that’s your journey and eventually you will learn So just embrace All parts of the journey the good the bad the ugly but don’t be too hard on yourself just keep learning and moving forward

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with up-and-coming broadcasters/social media influencers because I know a lot of people would rather be social media influencers now than the traditional broadcast path that I had but it’s really the same thing just in a different medium so I want to collaborate with anybody that has interest in broadcast or social media and you can reach out to me on Instagram @LINDSAYYONAIR , Twitter @lindsayyonair, and FB @Lifewithlindsayradio
