Meet Shigeko Ito

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shigeko Ito. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shigeko , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My sense of purpose has evolved over time. But if I focus on where I am now as a published author, I started writing for myself as a way to cope with motherhood that turned out to be far more challenging than I’d ever imagined. I loved my son dearly, yet I was often gripped with anxiety and worry that made it impossible to just relax and enjoy motherhood.

Through that process, I began to understand how my unresolved childhood trauma had simply stayed hidden and then resurfaced during times of acute stress. I came to see that sharing my story might help others who have similar struggles feel less alone. So what began as self-exploration gradually became a purpose to bring this story into the world.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I published my memoir, The Pond Beyond the Forest: Reflections on Childhood Trauma and Motherhood, in October 2025. I am now transitioning from “author” to “advocate,” focusing on raising awareness about invisible childhood trauma—specifically emotional neglect—and how it echoes throughout adulthood, especially in motherhood, marriage, and overall mental well-being.
My memoir is a quiet, deeply reflective piece with evergreen topics, suited for a slow-burn impact. I’m grateful that it is finding its foothold in public and academic libraries, where it can serve as a permanent resource for readers and researcher seeking to understand this often-overlooked and misunderstood condition.
I’m currently doing a series of podcast interviews to spread awareness and inspire hope that healing is possible. My audiobook will be launched in June or July 2026, so please stay tuned!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities that most impacted my journey were radical honesty, non-judgmental self-observation, and perseverance.

Radical honesty helped me get in touch with long-buried, painful memories and feelings, finally naming them and understanding how they impacted my life. Non-judgmental self-observation helped me study my own patterns without getting flooded by negative emotions fueled by a harsh inner critic. This gradually led to deeper self-awareness and compassion—almost like fostering a nurturing inner voice—which was tremendously healing. Perseverance was what kept me going amidst repeated rejections, setbacks, and self-doubt, even at times things seemed too painful to continue.

For anyone early in their journey, I recommend starting with something small, like bearing your soul on the page in a private journal with vulnerability and honesty.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one challenge I’m currently facing is navigating the “post-publication blues.” After the high of a book launch came this vulnerable period of “now what?” where self-doubt can creep back in, and it’s easy to get trapped in the comparison game or feel like I’m not doing enough.

To overcome this, I have to constantly ground myself in the belief that I have done my best to send my “book baby” into the world. I am focusing now on alignment with my higher purpose by staying engaged with intentional outreach through podcast interviews, sharing my message on social media, and writing essays to deepen the conversation around invisible wounds. I am also redirecting my energy toward my audiobook production, aiming to release within a couple of months. By staying focused on my mission to raise awareness, I’m managing to quiet the self-doubt and keep moving forward.
