Meet Thomas Jimenez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Thomas Jimenez . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Thomas below.

Thomas , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My dad is someone who has taught me a lot on working hard. He would tell me that if I truly want something in life, I would have to work for it.
If I had a dream or a goal it was not going to come easy.
I’ve definitely had to put in some work to get to where I’m at today. I’m still not stopping here., I’m still going to work hard moving forward to get to where I want to be.
And that goal is to be a full time musician.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Thomas Jimenez. I’m a local country music singer/songwriter.
I’ve been playing live music for a little over a year now. I actually started back in 2019, but when covid hit I unfortunately had to stop playing live.
However I never stopped wanting to be a musician, I focused on wanting to write my own original music, using the covid times to focus on everything I missed in the past.
I wrote my first song back in 2021 with my friend Christian, we later went on to release the song on to digital platforms.
You can still catch the song on Spotify today, titled “backroad”.
After releasing my first song I wanted to get back to playing live again, starting off playing open mics, or at any venue that would let me play for them. This was in late 2021. In the summer of 2022 I joined a group called “San Antonio sound garden” which helped young artists find gigs around San Antonio find gigs. They got me my first paid gig at a small art studio in south town.
Today, over a year later I’ve played at much bigger venues, venues like “The Rustic” “151 saloon” “thirsty horse saloon” and “smoke Texas” just to name a few.
I also have 4 songs out, and I’m currently working on my first EP!
I definitely have a lot of people to thank, that have helped me get to where I am today.
And it’s only going up from here. This past summer I got news that I’ll be playing at the “2024 San Antonio rodeo barbecue cook off” which is definitely going to be something I’ll check off my bucket list!
Hope to see y’all at a show someday!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Working hard is one! It is hard work being a musician, having to work at my day job all day, then go out and play a show stay out late, then have to get up early in the morning for work. Definitely tired, but it’s the cost of getting to do what you love.

Staying humble is another.
It’s always good to still learn from, and help one another.
If I meet a well experienced musician I want to learn from them, so I can become a better musician.
If I meet a new and young musician I want to help them, so they can become a better musician.
It’s just something I love about what I do!

The last one is going to be, never giving up.
In my short time of being a musician, I’ve been told “no” many times. Band members have left me for better opportunities.
And I’ve played shows where I’ve had an off day, and I sounded terrible.

These are just somethings all musicians go through, but never let anyone of these things stop you from being a great musician.

Since these experiences I’ve, played at great and well known venues around town. Found new band members who have helped me play shows, and record new songs. I’ve also improved my energy, when I entertain to keep the crowd engaged.

I’m definitely always trying to improve, and work harder. So I can be a full time musician!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I definitely have to give a big shout out, and thanks to my good friend, and fellow country singer Jerry DeLeon. He has helped me with so much in my career. By giving me the opportunity to play at bars when he allowed me to open a few shows for me. Connecting me to new people, which has helped me get into new venues. He has definitely helped me become well known in the local country music scene.
It’s such a cool feeling when he introduces me to new people and they say “oh I’ve heard of you before”.
It’s definitely a dream come true to be able what I do today.
To do what I love, and have a career with it is just so special.
