We recently connected with Cassandra Goldberg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassandra, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I grew up in a military family where we moved consistently for 17 years before my dad retired. My dad, a captain of a Naval destroyer, had a philosophy of “you take care of it and it will take care of you”, which holds true to many aspects of my life. My mom, on the other hand, who didn’t go to college, went from bank manager to real estate broker guru throughout my childhood. I saw her work hard, striving to be the best mom to my brother and I while maintaining a brokerage at The Hotel Del Coronado, which has over 135 years of history!
To me self discipline goes hand in hand with work ethic. I am an avid list maker and I have the discipline to prioritize the importance of each task during the week. Then daily, pick the hardest blocking tasks first so it is out of the way and I can take care of smaller and easier tasks later. Of course, I have had days where I am less productive, procrastinate more, or am working through difficult stressors in life. I know my limits and prioritize self care. To take care of oneself means being better equipped to take care of others. I practice diaphragmatic breathing three times a day, journal thoughts and feelings, and spend time with my husband and son as much as I can. My family takes the time nightly to focus on the positive and stay what we are grateful for before each meal. These practices ground my family and myself.
My work ethic is very important to me and something I take pride in. I have developed a reputation of professionalism and integrity and I never take shortcuts. I try to show up with the same mindset every day so the company can be successful and my team can count on me. These make for a very rewarding outcome individually and as a team.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, who recently celebrated the purchase and re-launch of my own practice in Coronado, California called Rooted Life Family Chiropractic. I specialize in taking care of families, kiddos and mamas through their pregnancy. Chiropractic care is unique because I can help patients in a natural way, and often help when other medical disciplines have failed to help. For example, a 2 month old was brought in due to constipation; not being able to poop for 6 days at a time. The primary care physician wanted this baby to be placed on a suppository to release the constipation for a continuous 30 days. Not wanting to have the baby go through that the parents elected to have their baby come to my office. Within one adjustment, the baby had what we call “a blow out”! The parents brought the baby in twice a week for the next four weeks and I was able to remove the interference within their body to allow them to go potty regularly.
Not everyone is aware of how a holistic health mindset can benefit them, or if they do they often don’t know where to start. I enjoy being a resource to my patients and having a network of like minded practitioners who can work in cohesion with me to help look at a patient’s problem holistically.
In addition to my work with Rooted Life, I also have a non-profit, where I can help those that can’t normally afford to get chiropractic care. I plan to expand this non-profit over the next few years to bring chiropractic care to those who can benefit from it from low income communities to orphanages even to animal shelters too. It’s just another opportunity that I am really grateful and blessed that I am able to do.
My path was not a linear one to chiropractic. My family was blessed to be stationed and have my dad retire in Coronado. I graduated high school there then attended CU Boulder before transferring closer to home at CSU Monterey Bay. In 2016, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and was accepted into Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in the Caribbean. I was ready to live out my dream of being a veterinarian but when I was studying there I realized I was not feeling fulfilled by the work I was doing. I wanted to help animals and change their world but this didn’t feel like the way I wanted to go about it. I left Ross University and tried to find my next adventure and career path. I had experienced chiropractic before, when I would get sick I would go, get adjusted, sweat it out that night and feel much better. But, at that time, little did I know all the other benefits of it. I researched some more and decided to go to chiropractic college while also attending an animal chiropractic school since I still was passionate about helping animals.
I studied at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California where I received advanced training in the Sacro-Occipital Technique, Activator, Chiropractic BioPhysics, Advanced Gonstead, and Kinesiotaping. Beyond those advanced studies, I spent time with the pediatrics clubs learning about chiropractic for pregnancy and pediatrics as well as learning more about doulas, midwives and home births. I immediately fell in love! Further into my studies, I obtained the Webster Technique certification, focusing on the bones, muscles, and ligaments involved in the pelvic region to aid in structure stability, relaxation, and proper function for all these different benefits for pregnant individuals.
During my schooling, I met my husband, got married and we decided to start a family. Being pregnant while in school allowed for an unequaled real life connection with the topics I was learning. My adjusting partner in school, now Dr. Brittnnie Ramirez in Los Angeles, took great care of me adjusting me weekly which made a huge difference in my pregnancy and birth experience. I had no pain until the last three weeks of my pregnancy, walking 3 miles daily. My water broke at 4:30am Sunday morning and my son was born in the water at home 24 hours later. Being at home allowed me to be comfortable in my environment. I could eat, drink, and move at my leisure. My son also had his first adjustment within hours of being born.
I find it surreal that at just 30 years old, I am in the position of owning a practice in my hometown. Providing natural healthcare through chiropractic care to my community has allowed me to meet like minded people and fulfills my professional goals. I love working for my community so I sponsor various local events such as the Ruff Run held by Paws of Coronado as well as supporting the Coronado Youth Softball that supports girls sign up fee and gear.
I am eager to help any and every one. I am kind of an open door, anyone can come in, say hello, get to learn more about chiropractic. I am also all about individualized care plans. How I adjust you one day may not be how I adjust you the next day because I am listening to your body and its needs for that day.
Currently I am cash based and accepting Medicare.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Like I have mentioned before, my journey was not a linear one, but I had some constant skills that helped me in everything I have put my mind to. The most impactful skill contributing to my work ethic is not being afraid to take initiative while simultaneously also being adaptable when factors change. Through life there are many changes and challenges one might face, but staying true to yourself, adapting to those changes and challenges allows you to grow individually and professionally; especially being a woman sole practitioner. Also, being able to break your goals down into small incremental steps that can be achieved daily will help you keep moving toward your desired outcome.
Learn from your mistakes. Keep moving forward. It will be worth it!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes always! I love connecting and collaborating with other natural healthcare providers. I strive to find a community of resources so my patients have the most beneficial outcome of care. Such providers are midwives, doulas, pelvic floor specialists, educational therapists, lactation consultants, acupuncturists, naturopaths, and much more!
Because I take care of everyone, from “womb to tomb” I like to say, I connect with all those who can assist my patients. Their overall health is important and the goal is to take care of them in the best possible way by providing the educational resources so they can make the best informed decisions for their health and be able to connect to those providers to get the care they need.
If you believe we can benefit each other’s patients or clients, please reach out!
