We recently connected with Dr. Travis Arrington and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Travis , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Neither of my parents have college degrees, and so in some respects, the odds were stacked against me at finishing college. My brother was the first in our family to get a bachelors. I completed my bachelors, and after a few years, decided to pursue my doctorate and completed that as well.
The headspace as a first generation graduate student is an interesting place to be. Some thoughts tell you you can’t do it, and and then you look around and see others doing it and you just keep showing up. I drew inspiration from my peers and their confidence for me to be able to finish the program. It definitely took a tribe for me to successfully complete my doctorate program.
I think that’s a good lesson for any hard thing in life when we have others around us that are doing the hard thing, the hard thing seems normal and thus easier. Even if others aren’t doing the same thing you are, having the support and encouragement and belief of friends and family, can give you the courage to dare greatly.
Another point of opposition, we faced was opening a business straight out of grad school. I was a business entrepreneurship, major and undergrad, and I knew all too well, the dismal success rate of new businesses but as in the previous example, I surrounded myself with successful business owners asked lots of questions and formulated a plan with their support to launch a business. Of course things haven’t gone according to plan in every respect, but our business has grown every month. We’ve been open and we’re proving the naysayers and haters wrong.
I believe you can do anything you set your mind to. I also believe that there will always be naysayers and haters, and that it’s just a matter of developing the skill of blocking out those comments and staying laser focused on what you believe inside you can achieve.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
When I decided to become a doctor, I wanted to focus on getting to the root cause of peoples problems. I believe that when we focus on the root cause the results are always better and everybody wins. The style of chiropractic I do is unique in its approach and delivery but research and our own patient results have proven it to be one of the most effective styles of chiropractic at restoring optimal well-being.
Chiropractic is excellent at restoring communication between the brain and the body and thereby aligning the bones and muscles of the body. One thing chiropractic does not address is neurological degeneration, and soft tissue injuries.
We recently added a comprehensive protocol for neuropathy treatment that we are excited to offer the Salt Lake community! Patients under this protocol on average see a 50% reduction in pain after just 90 days!
Additionally, we are excited to be the first provider of Softwave tissue regeneration therapy in Sandy Utah! This treatment stimulates endogenous stem cells and reignites the healing process for injured or inflamed ligaments and muscles. Anything with arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, vascular issues, or muscle tears respond incredibly well to this protocol and because it’s regenerative and nature once the area heals there isn’t a need to keep coming back unless the patient has another injury.
We offer all of these protocols to help people face their storm, or in essence, the difficult health challenges they’re facing and be able to move through them, and find abundance and quality of life without pain.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first that comes to mind is clarity. I had to be focused and clear on what I wanted. With clarity I was able to revisit my goal and stay the course even when things got hard.
If you struggle with clarity, take some time with a pen and paper, and write down what you really want out of life. The act of writing things down helps make our goals and desires, tangible and easier to act on.
After clarity, I would say having a vision and plan to accomplish what you want. I put many hours into a very detailed business plan and budget before we opened our office. That time was well spent because it helped us get a loan and have a strategy and purpose for how and where we were spending our money. Many successful businesses have accountants as the CEO, which I believe is a testament to the importance of knowing your numbers and your budgets.
I believe enthusiasm for the business you’re starting is incredibly important to your success. If your attitude and demeanor is one of high energy and excitement for your business, and what you’re opening, and you’re willing to put yourself into the community and on social media in a positive energetic way to some degree you’ll naturally attract people and opportunities that will help you net work and ultimately be successful
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
This is a great question! I believe it’s both. I think it’s important to play to your strengths initially as a business owner, but also be aware of your weaknesses and know what you need to learn in order to make sure those areas are still contributing to the greater whole. Many of the most successful people in business were not naturally good at many aspects of business and had to develop the skills. I think it’s really easy to say I’m not good at that and place that as a permanent stamp on our identity. But learning any skill, including administrative task, leader ship, communication, marketing can all be learned. These skills can be learned very much in the same way as learning, how to paint, how to play a sport, or how to speak a different language. It takes time dedication and effort, but when we view those strengths and weaknesses, simply as skills that are developed or under developed it helps put things in perspective that we just need to learn more to accomplish the goal we want to achieve.
