Meet Tyler Halstead

We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Halstead recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tyler, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose really comes from a position of authenticity and honesty. In the crazy world of alcohol/spirits I was shocked by the number of brands who don’t even make their own products. My goal is to run a company that prides itself on craftsmanship with meticulous management of the fine details of the distillation process.

In today’s day and age, price point really doesn’t determine quality. Our goal is to bring the world an ultra-premium product at an affordable price and do all of it from the least expected state, Utah.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Tyler Halstead and I am the President and CEO at Outlaw Distillery. Outlaw is a small batch, grain to glass distillery dedicated to the best hand crafted spirits. We specialize in whiskeys and rums with a focus on premium all-natural products (no artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors).

By way of background, I am originally from Southern California and after a career across Private Equity, Technology, and the Film Business I found my way to Utah. I currently live in Heber which is quite possibly the most beautiful valley in the world. I came to Outlaw in 2020 and immediately recognized an opportunity to lead this business into it’s next phase of growth. When you are making a product as good and different as ours, I knew with the right levers we have the opportunity to introduce our products and our selves to a much wider audience.

I am excited to introduce Outlaw as it is today because in the very near future we will be an entirely different business and possibly available at your local liquor stores.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three (3) most important skills, in my opinion, are the following: – Listening Skills: This is critical as it relates to both employees and customers, if you listen closely they will tell you exactly what they want and how to make things better.
– Perseverance: It is critical as an entrepreneur to be so deeply committed to your goals that you can sustain even the most grueling days.
– Authenticity: Never compromising your values and authentically being oneself is all anyone can ask for.

To the young folks out there my key piece of advice is to focus on doing the things that immediately add value. Sometimes that is not the most glamorous of tasks, or the most prestigious jobs but simply working everyday to improve your organization will pay off infinitely today and in the future.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always looking for fun local partners. We make an incredibly fun product (whiskey and rum) but beyond our initial spirits is a whole world of fun just waiting to be explored.

A really good whiskey is important but a great cocktail is mind-blowing. We at Outlaw are just one part of that process. To all the bartenders and mixologist out there we would love to collaborate.

Our whiskey barrels are incredible opportunities to swap flavors and create truly one of a kind products. To our local breweries, other distilleries, and other craft product producers let’s play and see what happens when your product sits in our whiskey barrels.

To any and all distributors, we are finally ready to expand to new markets and we cannot do it without your help. Anyone looking to add premium whiskeys and rums from Utah, of all places, we are open for business.
