Meet Tyler Herwig

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Herwig a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tyler, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered music at a young age and learned I had an affinity for it naturally. It took me up until a few years ago to really learn how to work that love of music into what my purpose is. Before three years ago, I struggled with a drug and alcohol addiction that ran my life. Once I became sober and I began following my faith- it showed me that God has called me to share my story with addiction in an open and honest way. My gift of music has been the perfect outlet for that and has given my life a purpose that I feel fulfilled in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been blessed for the past 15 years to be playing music all over the Midwest. I’m a professional musician and have been since I was young, but it wasn’t until recently that I had the courage to take my passion and turn it into a full-time career. Many people ask me what my “day job” is- and it always makes me laugh a little because music is all I do. I think people forget there is a whole business aspect to running a successful career in the world of the arts- and I want to show other artists that it is, in fact, possible to pursue your calling full-time. Outside of daily performances and meeting fans, I’m always looking to make more music and collaborate with other artists! I’ve had the opportunity to work with producers and other writers to share new projects with the world. Most recently, I’ve worked with a label in Nashville to write, record, and produce my newest country single: Living In The Last Days. It’s my first country single that you can listen to on your local radio station. I’m proud and excited to share this with you on such a large scale! It keeps the balance of meeting local fans and reaching national fans that I don’t always get to see at performances. I love meeting my biggest supporters and getting to know them a little more personally.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For new artists just developing their careers, I’d absolutely recommend utilizing all of the different resources available that support them. I never knew how many organizations existed early on in my music career that have been a total game changer since joining them. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for help, for collaborations, and networking. You’re not alone as an artist and you shouldn’t be! I’d also recommend creating your brand right away. Establish who you are, what you stand for, and what your creative outlook standards are- I wonder from time to time how different my career would look if I had taken these steps sooner. I’m very proud of my career and wouldn’t change it for the world, but these are my recommendations to help with impacting your journey early as an artist.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I recommend when someone is feeling overwhelmed to lean into your passions. Personally, I love spending time with my family, notably my new baby girl and introducing her to music. I also lean into music very heavily- I begin writing to express my feelings which is something I’m hoping listeners can feel in my music. Outside of my family and my music being my main outlets, I do enjoy hobbies such as going to the gym, reading my bible, and renovating my new house. Establishing my passions early and leaning into them in those moments of stress has been a game changer for me in my career. It’s allowed my work to flourish without becoming overwhelmed.
