Meet Amber Allen

We recently connected with Amber Allen and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Creativity blocks are bound to happen, but prayer and brainstorming is how I overcome them. I find myself becoming depressed when I have creativity blocks because it is frustrating to lag content and struggle to meet to the demands of the business. For me prayer and brainstorming have always been my supports that never fail to uplift me and in turn allow me to produce something enticing for my target audience. When I brainstorm, I always think about what excites my audience and my brand identity. For some, creativity blocks, drives undesirable behavior like mimicking and plagiarism, but for myself it allows me to think about the WHY behind Skinvestment Body Company and how our WHY sets us apart from our competitors. In all creativity blocks are challenging, but I’ve produced some of my best content coming out of creativity blocks. I believe being able to be still allows for us to share our most creative visions.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m not a chemist, but my drive to find a solution for my partner and Chief Marketing Officer led me to formulate my own products. After trying many conventional products to help with his eczema and feeling let down after spending hundreds of dollars I knew it was time to take matters into my own hands. After a few years of studying business and gaining my Master of Business Administration, I decided to share Skinvestment Body Company with others. Now, after almost one year from launching our online store, we are vastly growing in The Bluff City and across the U.S. What’s most exciting is being able to provide clean options for all people, but especially minority people, who have limited access to organic and natural options. Being able to provide a community of people with access to products that can contribute to their well-being and physical health brings the most joy. Often times I speak to African- American men who share with me that skin health has not been intentional in their lives and that they neglect their skin 90 percent of the time. This is absurd, but not uncommon, which is a constant reminder for us to keep our values of skin health at the forefront of everything that we do. Our skin is the largest organ that we have and I’m on a mission to spread awareness while providing clean and accessible options. Having our products available online allows for our consumers to have access at their fingertips. Easy checkout and fast shipping contribute to the access while providing a safe space to leave online reviews and engage with us on our social accounts. Our goal for the next six months is to be featured on the shelves of local shops throughout the city of Memphis too heighten our access and awareness in our community.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Not being afraid to fail was one of the most impactful qualities in my journey. As I’m still on this journey of scaling my business there’s no room for negative thinking. Praying, meditating, and executing are skills that I take with me. I like to refer to 1 Peter 5:6-7. That scripture grounds me and allows me to network without fear of failure. The advice I would give to folks who are early in their journey is to be your biggest supporter. Showing up for yourself is key, because if you are not showing up for your business, you cannot expect for others to show up for you or take your business serious. Creating social media accounts for your brand, focusing on your target audience, having branding photoshoots, and networking within your community can help you best develop your brand and set you apart from your competitors.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are always looking to collaborate with local businesses. Fitness facilities, spas, wellness centers, and retail stores are some collaborations we foresee in the near future. Our website is the best point of contact where you can access our online contact form or send us a direct email to discuss collaboration efforts.
