We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shana Wise a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shana, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry, etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I intentionally take one day a month for self-care. This consists of getting a facial, going to the beach, getting my hair done, or retail therapy.
By intentionally and purposefully breaking away, at least one day a month, it helps me to disconnect from my regular responsibilities and focus on my needs.
When I go to the beach to just listen to the waves, feel the wind on my face, watch other people have a good time, and just chill it all rejuvenates me. It also helps me to put my life in perspective and not worry about things because I know everything’s gonna work out.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I oversee two nonprofit Ministries. One is a church ministry that I pastor with my husband Ron, called Wise Choice Ministries. We not only host weekly church services, but we are very involved with our community. We host a weekly non-gambling bingo that is free to attend and our participants win prizes donated by local businesses. We also minister at food, pantries, and impoverished neighborhoods in Jacksonville Florida. I and others also go on global missionary trips throughout the year.
The other ministry that I founded is called The Well Christian Women’s Network. This ministry is located in Jacksonville, Florida, and it hosts monthly women’s worship services, women’s retreats, and conferences, and hosts a talk show on YouTube, titled Chief Women Arise.
I have been doing both of these Ministries for the past seven years and it brings me joy to serve others and my community.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that impacted my journey I feel were helpful to my growth mentorship, being open to collaborating and working with others, and to surround myself with a diverse group of people who have goals and visions, that they want to achieve and accomplish.
There have also been times when I “just had to do it scared”. I had to push past the opinions of other people and what they might think and go ahead and do what I felt in my heart.
There have been times when I failed, but they were necessary in order for me to grow and learn. Looking back, I have had more success than failure, because I chose to learn from my mistakes and not keep repeating them.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed and stressed, I normally step back from the project and wait. There have been times when I have been just too focused on one particular thing but wasn’t able to see the big picture. That’s when I had to pull away and get in a quiet place and refocus and regroup.
I also believe that it is important to get proper rest, mind body, and soul. When these three areas are at rest and in sync with one another, I believe you can work and function at your highest potential.
