Meet Dr. Andrea Curry

We recently connected with Dr. Andrea Curry and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Andrea, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
I learned to be generous by observing the example set by my beloved grandmother and parents. I watched them meet the needs of so many while never making a big deal about it or generating any fuss. I have a great admiration for how they always give so unselfishly, even when they have needs of their own.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work full-time in oncology research. While reviewing the literature to complete my doctoral program, I found in the literature there is a need for the inclusion of patients’ voices within research. So much of what is published is focused on physicians’ perspectives that more is needed regarding what patients want.

Outside of being a researcher, I own a thriving consulting business, Dr AC Writes LLC. The mission of my organization is to help dreams become a reality, one edit at a time. I focus my efforts on assisting doctoral candidates worldwide who are seeking to complete the publication requirements for their degree. I have completed over 700 projects and have over 200 doctors who have entered the academy after securing my services. I have offered this service for 4 years and decided to trademark my business name.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that were most impactful on my journey academically and professionally were focus, confidence, and tenacity. With all the challenges of trying to achieve, it was sheer determination that helped me to accomplish some of the things that I only dreamed of, such as becoming a doctor, publishing articles, and presenting research findings at conferences. As I tell my students and clients, life does not stop when you are on the road to achievement. You must be willing to bear down and get it done. My advice for those early in their journey is to always remember their ‘why’. I had to keep my ‘why’ in the forefront of my mind, which helped me push hard to finish my degree.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I slow down to be reflective. I am an analyzer, so I think about everything that I have going on and how I can eliminate or minimize stress. In 2021, I joined a gym and started attending high interval intensity training classes. I love being able to leave it all on the floor after I finish a strenuous workout. The most important thing is that you have an outlet to release those emotions.
