Meet Tyra Moore

We recently connected with Tyra Moore and have shared our conversation below.

Tyra, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from being humble. I know what it’s like not to have money, things I need and also things I want. When I figured out the meaning of giving back/paying it forward at 14 years old, I made it my duty to one day do the same for others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Tyra Moore, I am the Founder of A Girl Like Me Inc. From personal experience of being pregnant at the age of 14 years old in 2007, and nobody knew. I gave birth the same week that my mom finally found out. I did not have anything for my baby but when my mom told everyone, my family, friends and community came together to make sure that I and the baby had everything we needed, and it lasted for a few years. From that moment, I promised myself that I would one day pay it all forward by helping Girls, Teens, Teen Moms and Moms.

A Girl Like Me Inc is a (501(c)3) located in Detroit, MI. Our mission is to educate and encourage Girls, Teens, Teen Moms, and Young Moms between the ages of 11 to 25 to make healthy life choices.

The most exciting thing about running A Girl Like Me Inc is working a job I love, helping families in need, being a voice for others that has/are going through what I’m going through and also being able to do exciting events for families.

We are currently working on our 2nd annual mom prom for teen mom’s 17 to 100 years old that never got the opportunity to attend their high school prom including myself because we were teen parents.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were believing in myself, knowing that it won’t be all bad always and knowing one day I will help others like me and also prevent this from happening to others.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The particular challenge I am currently facing is funding for the organization. Since I run the organization by myself, I would love to have funding to pay 2 part time staff members, funding for materials needed to run the organization, get a house hub to provide free feminine products, diapers, pull ups and more to families in need. Have a space where mom’s can come to wash for free, have snacks for themselves and the kids, hot meals, internet for job search, homework and needed resources.
