We were lucky to catch up with MacKenzie Galloway recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi MacKenzie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My parents and my ancestors. My parents run very successful businesses that they each started from the ground up. These are businesses that are driven by their passions and what they love. My parents never let society, money, or circumstances be a deterrent to pursuing what they love, and that is truly admirable. This allowed me to always pursue what I love, and let greed or others’ beliefs prevent me from doing what I am called to do. I work hard to get what I want, and I don’t let anything stop me. I have been blessed to come from a line of people who have done the same.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
A Detroit, Michigan native, writing her first book at six years old, and becoming a broadcast journalist at eleven years old, MacKenzie has always had a deep passion for telling stories. Whether you are watching her films, listening to her mediations and podcasts, reading her articles, or shopping her creations, you are guaranteed to deepen your consciousness.
This year, MacKenzie received an MFA in Screenwriting and Filmmaking at Emerson College in Los Angeles and Boston, and received her Bachelors in French Communications Media with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism and a double major in Bio-Cultural Anthropology at American University. She works on Capitol Hill as the Digital Media Manager for Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and runs her own film production company and fashion store, Conscious Creations LLC. MacKenzie has traveled and lived all over the world, everywhere from Italy, to Morocco to Ecuador. MacKenzie also volunteers for a local Girl Scout Troop in D.C., and sits on the selection board for the American Film Institute. She has a passion for telling intercontinental stories of those whose voices are otherwise silenced.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reading – reading is the first thing that comes to mind because it is something so essential to our well-being that as a society, we have strayed so far away from. Social media has overtaken popular media, leaving books neglected. Reading increases focus, stimulates the mind, expands knowledge and so much more. I love being immersed in a great book, its like entering a new world. I love to read before I write because it helps me be focused and find inspiration.
Traveling – in America especially, it is so easy to think that the world is so small and solely revolves around you and your beliefs. Traveling, both domestically and internationally opens you up to ways a life that you have only read in books, seen on TV, or not even been exposed to at all. And it is usually the latter. The world is huge, and rich with so many different people, cultures, landscapes, and lifestyles. It is a blessing and a privilege to be able to do so.
Spiritual Alignment – being aligned and grounded with your spirituality and beliefs is essential. No matter what you believe in, or who you pray to, being grounded and in-flow with your beliefs is imperative to be able to move through life at your divine pace, and truly fulfill your destiny. As a spiritual individual and an astrologist, knowing the cycles of nature and its effects on us is one of my favorite ways to be grounded. Taking in the natural energy surrounding me and meditating on it. Praying, connecting with ancestral energy, having a spiritual community are all things that uplift me in the best ways.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I get overwhelmed, I know that it is time for me to pause. I am always on go go go mode, which I love, and its fun, but our bodies must rest and recharge to be able to get things done. If we neglect our bodies, it will only cause our work product to slow down, which will cause us to work even harder. No way! When I get overwhelmed, I read, meditate, play Sims, talk to my family, things that bring me peace and ease my anxious feelings.
I remember that my world is in my hands, and nobody controls my schedule, the things I put my time into, and what I do every day. Sure, I have jobs and responsibilities, but at the end of the day, I choose to work. I choose to be an adult in a society where there are responsibilities. But at the end of the day, I also choose what I put my time into. I am not obligated to do anything, and I have the freedom to do what pleases me and makes me happy.
