We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Henderson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
For the last year I took a step back and did everything I needed to do for my well being. I ran Flavors for over 7 years before I decided I wasn’t where I wanted to be. I was burnt out. I needed change.
So I did something. I moved from Austin, Tx to San Diego, Ca and really tried to take a break from fashion, from myself, from everything. Just breath for a minute. Now that time has gone by, I feel energetic again. Ready to start again. Be better and more in tune with my brand.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Taylor Henderson and I am the Creative Director and Owner of Flavors Studio (formally Flavors Creative Group). Flavors Studio has developed a unique identity within the fashion industry through the ability to merge streetwear with eco conscious design logistics. At the heart of the Flavors brand lies the conscious decision to create clothing that respects Mother Earth, and empowers customers through honesty and integrity in each garment made.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For my personal journey, it was most impactful to have drive, ambition and just try to be as consistent as possible. I am not formally trained, never went to college, and don’t know too many people in the fashion industry as a whole.
However, what I do have is a 8 year background in retail merchandising and buying, and an understanding of what people want and what is trending in regard to streetwear due to my extensive background in the skateboarding culture. Overall, I believe my willingness, over everything, is what drove me to continue Flavors and really try to set a new, harmonious tone for streetwear and conscious fashion.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth within the past year has been finally taking care of my health, mentally and physically.
You’ve got to know when to take a step back and breathe sometimes, and I never really figured that out until a year ago when the burnout began. I was always so anxious with this feeling that I needed to “keep up” (whatever that means), and continually worked to avoid dealing with decluttering my mind.
I have really taken some pride in the fact that it’s ok to take a break sometimes. It’s even more ok to not take yourself so seriously all the time, and I am glad I finally figured that out…it’s improved my life, a lot.
