We were lucky to catch up with DENEKA DOVE recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DENEKA, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I enjoy training and fitness. I workout 4-5 days a week in order to maintain my energy as well as my mental wellbeing. I do this along with therapy in order to keep myself focused and have time for my personal self. When you are well in mind, body and spirit I have had the ability to do my best work and provide the best customer service experience as a beauty professional. Long hours need me to be in tip top shape. I recognize my ability to execute service in a timely fashion and have more energy to get through my days.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have enjoyed my journey as a beauty professional. I took on being a fitness competitor as an outlet for improving my health, self-esteem and fun. As I have worked in the beauty industry I have noticed the improved quality of my services and as well as overall health when it comes to energy levels and encouragement to my clients who sit the my chair.
Your overall health can impact your skin, hair growth, and ability to feel your best. I love to show and educate my clients on what to do in between appointments. It’s all a learning experience and the information learned is to be shared to those who are willing to listen and apply it for themselves.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The best qualities I believe impacted my journey has been the the way I provide customer service, a relaxing experience and the knowledge I continue to obtain from continuing education in cosmetology, health and wellness.
When embarking on your journey in whatever field of your choosing, be committed to learning more, educating your clients so that they can follow through with their efforts and communicate in a timely fashion.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I’ve had the opportunity to participate in The City-Wide Barber and Beautician Association located in Houston, Texas. There is several members throughout the Houston area specializing in barbering, hair loss, makeup and so much more to learn from. We all have taken part in creating platforms for the surrounding area and growing industry. We are focused on keeping the beauty industry informed with licensing regulations, beauty standards and the most up-to-date beauty trends from around the world.
As we discuss the newness of things and how to care for ourselves as independent workers, we discuss how we take care of ourselves and maintain healthy working conditions as well lifestyles. We encourage using our workspaces to inform clients about how health may effect the body and beauty standards.
