We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sandra Myers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sandra, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
To be successful at anything, you need to understand why you do what you do; for me, it’s simple. I wanted other singles to find the once-in-a-lifetime love that took me 40 years to come by. Finding love was by far my most formidable life challenge. I did not get married until I was 40, yet I had been a matchmaker for over a decade, seeing love develop for other singles through my efforts. I knew to win at this, like myself, singles need to be encouraged and stay the course as love is ultimately worth the effort. Persistence and determination allowed me to finally meet my husband, which forever changed my life. My purpose is to help other singles stay motivated and fight for a love that can be downright frustrating at times to attain. My passion is always to inspire singles not to give up and or choose to believe it is something they can live without out of fear of failure. Working with thousands of singles over 27 years, I have seen firsthand how important love is and how it exponentially increases the quality of life when it’s the right person. You don’t need to change yourself to meet the right person. You need to find the right person for you. Professional matchmaking allowed me to do the work I love and help others stay inspired to find it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Amber and I began with the idea of becoming the “Gold Standard” of matchmaking. We both believed that the business would care for itself if it focused on client outcomes rather than the next new client. With 50 years of combined experience in the industry, we have created the best dating experience for wealthy single professionals and align them with the best team of professional matchmakers in the industry.
The company’s strength comes from the combined talents of both Amber & myself. Amber has forged incredible relationships throughout the years, bringing that breadth of resources to the company. Success in this industry is dependent upon the resources you have and the relationships you have maintained. I have focused primarily on the customer experience, allowing SDS to elevate that for our clients. Our environment is one where clients feel like family rather than just another number in a pool of people. SDS is where you can now have a way to engage in your dating life with a positive attitude and a genuine excitement for what’s next. Clients know when they invest with SDS that SDS is equally invested in their outcome and will support their efforts in every way possible.
While SDS cares for your heart, clients know they will care for someone else’s. Amber has an extraordinary personal story of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. To honor Amber’s miracle, SDS is committed to giving back to this incredible organization with every heart we touch! Select Date Society will donate a portion of your membership directly to the American Heart Association.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have allowed me to progress in my career are persistence, self-motivation, and my desire to help others I work with. When working with other matchmakers, I never let the industry competition affect how I treated anyone who needed my help in the workplace. I was always willing to train, help, or coach new matchmakers and, in doing so, forged wonderful relationships in the industry. Being self-motivated allowed me to be successful even when working remotely or when things were not going well because of the economy or other extraneous factors. I always knew the payoff was worth the effort. When you do what you love, you will not find it hard not to show up for your clients or help team members looking to achieve the same end goal.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents taught me incredible responsibility and a strong work ethic. I always knew the value of a dollar and that if I wanted something, it was always attainable through hard work. They both had an entrepreneurial spirit and believed in always having a plan and a goal. My mother was also an educator, which instilled in me structure and discipline. They both encouraged me to be the best at whatever I did from the Wendy’s drive-through window to owning my business. They laid the foundation that allowed me to achieve whatever I chose to do. I miss them both greatly, but I am thankful I was lucky enough to have them as my parents.
