We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Archibald recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
The very first thing I do when I am overcome with Creativity Blocks is play with my two kids; CJ, age 8 & Ben, age 4. Thanks to their playful and creative imagination, I can occasionally come up with unique new ideas for a number of photoshoots and poses. I also take a bit of a mental break and will scroll through TikTok or social media reels to watch a few how to’s to help inspire some new skills. When those don’t help, I look up a monthly photography challenge to work on finding something connected to that challenge to remember how much I started to love photography back when I was capturing everything and anything on my camera.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Archie’s Views Photography aims to capture scenes and subjects from fresh and captivating angles, offering viewers a unique perspective on familiar subjects. I pay great attention to detail, ensuring that each shot is meticulously composed, well-lit, and thoughtfully crafted. This dedication to quality results in stunning and visually appealing photographs. I also cover a wide range of genres, including landscape, portrait, wildlife, and sports photography. This versatility allows for a diverse portfolio that caters to different interests and preferences. I strive to establish an emotional connection with my audience. Each photograph tells a story or evokes a certain mood, inviting the viewer to feel a sense of immersion and engagement. I value professionalism and aim to provide excellent service to my clients. Whether it’s capturing precious moments at special events or creating stunning visual content for businesses, customer satisfaction is a top priority.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Photography is a multifaceted and evolving field, and numerous qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge contribute to its impact. While it’s difficult to narrow it down to just three, here are three key aspects that have been particularly impactful in the world of photography:
A strong foundation in technical skills is essential for any photographer. Understanding how to operate a camera, control exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), manipulate lighting, and compose a shot are crucial for capturing high-quality images. Proficiency in post-processing software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop also allows photographers to enhance and refine their images.
The ability to tell a compelling story through images is a hallmark of great photography. Successful photographers can capture emotions, narratives, and messages within a single frame or a series of images. This skill involves understanding composition, framing, timing, and perspective to create images that resonate with viewers on an emotional or intellectual level.
Photography has evolved significantly with technological advancements, from film to digital and now into the realm of AI and computational photography. Photographers who remain adaptable to new tools and techniques, as well as those who push the boundaries of traditional photography through experimentation and innovation, have a significant impact. This could involve embracing new camera technologies, exploring unconventional shooting methods, or incorporating post-processing techniques that yield unique results.
Of course, these qualities are just the tip of the iceberg. Creativity, a deep understanding of light, cultural awareness, business acumen, and a keen eye for details are also crucial for making a lasting impact in photography. The field is continuously evolving, so photographers who possess a well-rounded set of skills and an openness to learning will likely find the most success and impact in their work.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Feeling overwhelmed during your photography journey is not uncommon, especially when you’re passionate about improving and achieving your goals. Sometimes, stepping away from photography for a short while can help you gain a fresh perspective. Clear your mind, engage in other activities you enjoy, and give yourself a chance to recharge. Break down your photography goals into smaller, manageable steps. Setting achievable milestones will make your journey feel less daunting and more achievable.
Instead of fixating on perfection or immediate success, shift your focus to learning and growth. Embrace mistakes as valuable lessons that contribute to your improvement as a photographer.
Avoid constantly comparing yourself to other photographers, especially those who are more advanced or established. Remember that everyone has their own unique journey and timeline.
Engage in mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, to help you stay present and reduce stress and anxiety. Look for inspiration from different sources, such as photography books, exhibitions, or online platforms. Exploring the work of others can reignite your passion and creativity.
Give yourself permission to experiment and play with your camera. Try new techniques, shoot in different settings, and explore creative ideas without the pressure of producing perfect shots. Connect with fellow photographers, either online or in-person, to share experiences and seek advice. Joining a photography club or community can provide a sense of camaraderie and encouragement.
Take time to review your past work and accomplishments. Recognize how far you’ve come and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Create a plan or schedule to help you stay organized and prioritize your photography-related tasks. Having a clear roadmap can make your journey more manageable.
It’s okay to say no to certain projects or opportunities if they add unnecessary stress or take away from your enjoyment of photography. If feelings of overwhelm persist and significantly impact your well-being, consider seeking support from a mental health professional.
Remember that your photography journey is personal, and it’s important to find a balance between pushing yourself to improve and taking care of your mental and emotional well-being.
