We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Alyssa Easley PT, DPT. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Alyssa below.
Hi Dr. Alyssa , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being a “solopreneur” is not always easy. I’ve learned to lean into doing things that I’ve previously told myself would be too hard or that I’m not good at. Switching my mindset from “I can’t” to “I could try” has been so helpful in building my business. Staying true to what I feel is my purpose and calling is also part of what has led my business to be successful in an organic way. And lastly, knowing when to look for help or outside opinions. Finding a business coach and others that I can connect to for advice plus chatting about ideas helps keep me grounded and focused.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a doctor of physical therapy and specialist in pelvic floor rehab. I get to help people overcome pelvic floor issues so that they can live their best life! I get to guide people to recover from bladder problems, bowel issues (like constipation), pain or difficulty with sex, prolapse, issues related to pregnancy+postpartum, chronic pelvic pain and more. I especially love working with Moms for birth prep and for postpartum recovery and returning to fitness.
My practice, West Pelvic Wellness, is unique because I focus on treating pelvic floor issues with a wholistic, whole body approach to what’s happening at their pelvis and pelvic floor. My assessment will look at a person head to toe, which helps my clients get long lasting changes for their pelvic floor health. By using effective and evidence-based functional training, manual therapy, trigger point dry needling, cold laser therapy and corrective exercise, we can help guide people to feeling their best and having confidence in movement without pelvic floor worries.
We’re now offering a fun, pelvic-rehab focused Pilates class called Pelvic Wellness Pilates at our office in Katy! This class will help you build core and pelvic floor strength as well as overall flexibility and coordination. It’s perfect for pregnancy, postpartum or anyone dealing with pelvic floor issues.
West Pelvic Wellness also hosts a monthly Katy Mama Meet Up, a free coffee and social for all local Mamas. You don’t need to be a client to come to our meet ups. We provide coffee and snacks and often discuss a pelvic for mom-health related topic!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the biggest mindsets that made a big impact on my journey was faith in the fact that I know what is best for myself and my family. The health of myself and my family are my “why”. And when I make decisions for my business and my clients, keeping my why and my goals in mind help keep me on the right track.
Secondly, don’t be afraid to try something that’s not successful right off the bat. This is true for business ownership and life. You do your best to make decisions with the knowledge and skills you have in that moment, and its okay if that changes or shifts in the future as you and your business grow.
And lastly, as a Mom and Business owner it’s been critical to know I can’t do it all. Seeking out support and delegating have helped save my sanity in both roles. And actually delegating tasks and hiring some support professionals like my virtual assistant has only helped my business grow more!
How would you describe your ideal client?
I have a passion for working with Moms, although I treat people from all walks and phases of life dealing with pelvic floor issues. I love helping Moms recover from birth and get back to exercise like lifting and running. I also feel strongly about helping people be proactive about their pelvic floor health. When I work with someone, it’s my goal that they leave our session understanding what’s going on in their body and feeling hopeful about moving past their current struggles or symptoms. There are so many parts of pelvic floor health that can seem intimidating, scary and isolating. But I want to work with people and help them feel empowered to make a positive impact in their own pelvic health care.
