We recently connected with Kirstie Pike and Christine Diaz and have shared our conversation below.
Kirstie Pike and Christine Diaz, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
To us, finding our life’s purpose is a never ending adventure. Our purpose not only continues to unfold for us as individuals, but also for us as a couple over the years. To us, one of the beautiful mysteries of the world is finding new layers of your purpose as you continue to follow your passions throughout the course of your life.
One of the first conversations we had when we met nearly six years ago was about our shared love for travel. We talked for hours about the various trips we have been on in the past that altered our perspective of the world. We were always so excited to talk about all the places we would love to travel to and see. It became obvious that traveling was a huge passion point that gave us purpose and a vision. The beauty of our relationship is we both came from such different backgrounds, walks of life, challenges, and struggles and yet all of those moments led us to one another.
We quickly began planning travels and experiences together which led us to moving to South East Asia in 2019. We started capturing moments of our trip which led to our platform getting noticed by people all over the world, especially in the queer community. We didn’t realize at that time that being out, proud, and visible as a queer female couple was a form of positive activism that could inspire others to follow their dreams. We realized instantaneously that we wanted a platform dedicated to helping others while normalizing and empowering queer love. We were eager to educate ourselves, learn different traditions, backgrounds, listen to different stories, and impact that world in a positive way.
If we can use this one life to leave the world a little better than when we came, than we believe our life’s purpose has been complete and until then we are excited to see where our life leads us to next!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
On Airplane Mode is a platform empowering women and the LGBTQ+ community to follow their passions while celebrating who they are and who they love. We share high quality and educational content on our platform of our travels around the world that is normalizing queer love. We also consult brands and destinations globally on how to elevate their marketing strategies and policies to be more inclusive for diverse and under-represented communities. Additionally, we host educational workshops for businesses and creators to take their brands to the next level and we are keynote speakers at conferences and trade shows globally for LGBTQ+ tourism and women in travel.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, Passion, and Open-mindedness
These three qualities have not only helped us as individuals, but also helped our platform grow to what it is today.
There are always going to be people who tell you your dreams are not possible, not worth the time, not traditional, etc. The only thing that makes that true is if you believe it. Stay resilient in your journey and follow you passion with an open mind <3
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is to rest”.
This has always been such a powerful quote to us because we live in a society that make you feel like taking breaks for your mental, physical, and emotional health are going to set you back. However, we have learned through our trial and errors that we are more overwhelmed and stressed when we are not prioritizing our health or self-love. If you are feeling overwhelmed in a project remember to breathe, take a temporary break from it, and come back with a fresh mind. You will be surprised at the new creativity and motivation you can bring to your project after allowing yourself a moment to rest.
