We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jackie Carter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jackie below.
Jackie , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Imagine walking into a stunning wedding venue, filled with the aroma of fresh flowers and the soft glow of twinkling lights. I stand at the center of the room radiating confidence and excitment as I meticulously orchestrate the perfect day. As the only wedding planner in the room who looks like me, I know that the road to success may be paved with challenges, but I refuse to let that define me.
Throughout my journey as a wedding planner, and more often at the beginning there were many times that individuals and vendors were not willing to give me a chance. One particular event stands out-a wedding that allowed me to develp my skills and embrace diversity. The couple I was working with had a rich cultural background, and they wanted their wedding to reflect their heritage. While their traditions were unfamiliar to me, I saw it as an opportunity to grow and learn.
With determination, I immersed myself in research, delving into the intricacies of their customs and traditions. I sought guidance from experts, attended cultural events, and engaged in heartfelt conversations with the couple’s families. Every detail mattered, and I wanted to ensure that their wedding would be an authentic and respectful representation of their culture.
Finally, the wedding day arrived, and all my efforts came to fruition. The venue was transformed into a magnificant fusion of tradition and modern elegance. The couple’s customs seamlessly blended with contemporary elements, creating an experience that left everyone in awe. The couple and their families expressed their gratitude, acknowleding the dedication and expertise I brought to their special day.
Through this journey, I’ve learned that being the only one in the room who looks like me doesn’t diminish my effectiveness or success. It amplifies my strength and determination. I’ve fostered essential qualities of adaptibility, cultural sensitivity, and meticulousness, setting me apart as a wedding planner who not only embraces diversity, but fosters growth. My experiences inspire me to continue pushing boundaries, opening doors for others and making a lasting impact in the industry.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my experience, three key factors have played a significant role in ensuring success and keeping clients satisfied in the event coordination business. Organizational skills are absolutely essential. As an event coordinator, you’re juggling numerous moving parts – from coordinating with vendors to managing schedules and budgets. Being organized helps you stay on top of all the details and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. I’ve found that utilizing tools like event planning software, creating thorough checklists, and maintaining a well-structured calendar are invaluable in keeping things running smoothly.
Communication skills are paramount in this business. Clear and effective communication is key to understanding clients’ visions, addressing their concerns, and collaborating with vendors and team members. Active listening is equally important to grasp the nuances of what clients want. Regular and transparent communication throughout the planning process helps build trust and ensures that everyone is aligned and informed.
Creativity and problem-solving abilities have been game-changers for me. Events often have unexpected challenges, and being able to think creatively and find innovative solutions on the spot is crucial. It’s not just about troubleshooting; it’s about turning potential setbacks into opportunities to enhance the event experience. Additionally, a touch of creativity goes a long way in crafting unique and memorable events that leave a lasting impact on clients and guests.
My advice is to embrace a mindset of continuous learning and improvement. Seek out mentorship from seasoned professionals in the industry to gain insights from their experiences. Attend workshops, webinars, and industry conferences to stay updated on the latest trends and best practices. As you gain hands-on experience, don’t hesitate to ask clients for constructive feedback – it’s a valuable way to identify areas for growth.
thoughts?
Stay passionate about what you do. The event coordination business can be demanding, but the joy of creating memorable experiences for clients makes it incredibly rewarding. Strive for excellence, remain adaptable to change, and remember that each event is a learning opportunity that can help you refine your skills even further.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
An ideal client for an event coordination business would be someone who values organization, communication, and creativity. This client recognizes the complexity of event planning and appreciates the expertise that an event coordinator brings to the table. They understand the importance of clear and open communication, as well as the ability to adapt to unexpected challenges.
The ideal client is a proactive collaborator, willing to actively participate in the planning process by sharing their vision, preferences, and goals. They provide detailed information that allows the event coordinator to create a tailored and memorable event experience.
This client’s appreciation for creativity is evident in their openness to innovative ideas and unique event concepts. They recognize that events are opportunities to create lasting memories and are enthusiastic about exploring creative approaches to achieve that.
Financial responsibility is also a characteristic of an ideal client. They understand the value of the services provided by the event coordinator and are willing to invest in creating a remarkable event. However, they also appreciate the event coordinator’s commitment to ensuring their vision is executed within a reasonable budget.
Overall, an ideal client is a collaborative partner who values organization, effective communication, creativity, and professionalism. Their positive attitude and willingness to work closely with the event coordinator contribute to a successful and enjoyable event planning experience for both parties.
