Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bethany Ellis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bethany, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
When I was a child I often struggled to articulate myself, even more so when I was upset. I would get so worked up that I would hyperventilate and couldn’t speak. My father taught me how to calm myself down by breathing and slowing down my thoughts. As a pre-teen & teen I often kept to myself and my close friends. I was shy & didn’t want to bring any kind of extra attention to myself. Going to cosmetology school and becoming a stylist helped me come out of my shell and truly be able to communicate. I was being exposed and forced to interact with people from all different walks of life. I’ve been seeing clients since 2018. Overtime I have learned how to communicate effectively to better service my clients.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a curly hair specialist. I am known for my curly cuts, colors, & curl transformations/restorations. What sets me apart from others is my willingness to take my time to learn each & every individual‘s hair and keep the integrity and strength of their curl pattern in mind while giving them the hair shape and color they desire. I am also always willing to gain more knowledge on better taking care of my curly-headed clients. From a very young age, I knew I had an affinity for the beauty industry. Makeup was my first passion but the hair side quickly came natural to me. I realized after I was licensed that there was a great need for a stylist who worked with textured hair. But like with anything worth obtaining, there have been struggles. In my senior year of high school, I barely had any credits left I had to complete to pass. So I begged my guidance counselor to let me co-op so I could get a head start on my cosmetology hours. I knew what I wanted to do & didn’t want to waste my time in another class, but she laughed in my face & told me no. Once I enrolled in cosmetology school, I faced some adversity & discrimination while I was there. I’ve worked in three different cities, so I’ve rebuilt my clientele a few times, but I’m thankful to say I have very loyal clients who drive hours to see me. And some of whom have come to me since I was in cosmetology school.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Self motivation, a good personality, and willingness to learn. I think a good place to start is making sure you’re doing whatever you’re doing for the rights reasons & for yourself & nobody else. As far as a good personality, I think just being a true genuine human being can get you far in life. I feel like my clients truly just come to me because they like me as person & want to support me & my service is just a bonus sometimes. And you definitely have to have a willingness to learn. You will never know EVERYTHING. I stay open minded and I’m always researching & learning about my craft.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Characteristics of my ideal client would be open minded, genuine, positive, easy-going, understanding & compassionate.
