Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Kennedy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rebecca, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
It took years of practice and showing up for myself to build the confidence I have today. I truly believe I built my confidence by keeping the small promises I made to myself. Every time we keep a promise to ourselves, we build trust within ourselves and become much more confident in following through on our word.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist at The Gym Lab in downtown Orlando, and I’m extremely passionate about what I do! I struggled with borderline obesity the majority of my life. I often used food as a coping mechanism, and was bullied often for my weight. At 18 years old, after a tough talk with my doctor, I jumped into the fitness world headfirst. I fell in love with learning more, challenging myself, and helping others… but I started to become obsessed with achieving the “perfect” body.
After losing a significant amount of weight, I spiraled into the world of eating disorders and body dysmorphia. It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom and started recovery that I recognized what I wanted, what would truly make me happy: finding balance.
Now I teach my clients everything I have learned: fitness is not about obtaining the perfect aesthetic. It’s about making you feel like your best, badass, most empowered self. I love teaching clients how to move in fun, creative, inventive, and empowering ways that FEEL good. Exercise doesn’t have to be a dreadful act of self-inflicted pain towards ourselves. It can, and should, be an outlet of self-expression and source of self-care.
What my body is capable of > what my body looks like
I’m thankful for what I’ve been through, because not only has it made me stronger, but it’s also given me the wisdom, perspective, experience, and empathy a personal trainer needs to connect with clients on another level.
I’m here to change the way you think about fitness. 🙂
I am now (along with in-person training) doing virtual training through an app called Kickoff! I’m basically a pocket personal trainer 🙂 Here’s a link for $25 off your first month! https://www.trainwithkickoff.com/code/das4hf20
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Learning how to communicate properly to clients – I learned a lot through therapy! I truly believe every business owner should attend therapy to learn more about themselves and how they put themselves out there in the world. 2) Corrective Exercise Specialist certification – it taught me so much more about muscle imbalances and injuries. Learning how to identify imbalances but also correct them has helped my client’s quality of life day-to-day SO MUCH
3) Learning from people who have more experience than me – experience is invaluable and people who have been in the field for years have learned from practice how to implement the best practices for clients.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My mental health. Once I starting really taking care of my mental health, I felt much more confident in myself as a person but also as a businesswoman. By helping myself, I am able to help out many more people and at a much higher quality.
