We caught up with the brilliant and insightful XUAM LAWSON a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi XUAM, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from both my mother Hattie Lawson and my father Lee Lawson. I understand the shoulders which I stand on and how much they over came in life. I stand on the shoulders of their success and those whom came before them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the Program Director for 881.FM WFSK owned by Fisk University, a nationally syndicated radio host of my own gospel radio show “Real Gospel” with the Xman, author of the book Fatherhood, an assistant Pastor at the Cathedral of Praise COGIC, motivational speaker, husband and father member of the NAACP, NAN (The National Action Network and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. I don’t normally think about those things until I’m asked about it like this but when I reflect on it all I have to stop and say thank you Lord! It’s only through God’s grace and mercy I was able to and can continue to do what he allows me to do.
I enjoy everything I do but most recently God’s have been using me to speak into the lives of men and fathers. My book Fatherhood is a 365 Day Devotional that helps fathers and mentors to speak Gods work over their kids no matter how their lives are structured. You call, I will come and there’s nothing like watching men become more impowered to be better fathers, better mentors and better men. I’ve found that society spends a lot of time beating up on fathers, especially our black fathers, I’m here to encourage, uplift and motivate them.
My job as Program Director for 88.1 FM WFSK has allowed me to learn more about the radio industry from a management position as well as another form of servitude in helping the G.M. Sharon Kay. The format is smooth and contemporary Jazz. I also enjoy producing her radio talk show “Wha’s the 411” with Sharon Kay. It’s another opportunity to help in an area lacking in urban music and that’s “talk radio”. One day, just maybe one day on terrestrial radio we’ll have a 24/7 urban talk radio station to help keep the urban community stay informed, and discuss the issues pertinent us just like every almost every other demographic has except us.
It’s a blessing to have my own radio show, “Real Gospel” with the Xman. It’s a very long story as to how it got started and why but to make a long story short, I promised God I would give him a gospel radio show if he answered my prayers in other areas of my life. God answered my prayers and I immediately started working on Real Gospel as soon as he opened the doors. At that time I didn’t have one gospel CD, but since then God’s grown the show from a concept to one of the most listened to gospel shows on Sunday mornings from 9 am to 12 noon CST in Nashville TN to being Nationally Syndicated on the Rejoice Musical Soul food Network heard around the world every Saturday 5 pm – 8 pm EST. God gets the glory for all the things he has done, and continues to do.
So, I invite you to listen to Real Gospel where and when you can, and I’m always eagerly ready and available to speak to fathers and men, and I invite you to order my book Fatherhood either for yourself or to bless a father or group with this 365 page devotional.
I’d also like to thank my wife Rigena Lawson for all her love and support throughout everything God has blessed us to do. She is a wonderful wife and my biggest cheerleader. Our kids, as God has allowed us to parent a blended family, we have much knowledge to share with so many in Gods timing. I thank my mom Hattie Lawson for her love and support, my brother Zaire Lawson, my sisters Waissa & Yyokkia Lawson, cousins, and mother in law Rita McClain, father in law Gene Woods Sr. my pastor Bishop Jerry L. Maynard Sr, and my church family the Cathedral of Praise COGIC. Thank you all.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important skills I learned over the years are,
1. Learn everything you can about in every area you can about your career choice, You’ll never know when that knowledge will come in handy.
2. Don’t let the color of your skin define what you have to offer or bring to the table. Proverbs 18:16 says, “16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” It says man but this applies to women as well. When you walk in the “will” of God, he will open doors for you no person can close.
3. Stay humble, always keep people around you who will help celebrate you when you’re doing well, but who will also let you know if and when you’re ego has taken over. You never want to lose sight of God by making things about you, don’t steal Gods glory.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Speaking to men groups and fathers are a passion for me as well especially fathers. I can’t begin to express the amount of fathers who are thankful and appreciate the fact someone speaks directly to what they’re going through and what we deal with. Our society often talks down to fathers especially those who have failed relationships which simply means they have children out of wedlock. I’m here to encourage them and to let them know that no God still sees them, God still loves them, and God can still restore them. Public speaking and allowing them to have my 365 page devotional has already blessed both men, women, and their children.
