We were lucky to catch up with Kameron Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kameron, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
The start of my imposter syndrome came from the field I am working in now (audio). When it comes to the audio industry, there are a lot of gatekeepers that don’t really want to teach young engineers how to get their foot in the door. No matter how many emails you send and job applications your turn, for some reason they don’t want you to succeed. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid that the new generation of engineers would come and take their jobs. All I know is that they were in the same position that most of the entry level engineers were in. And now that they’re in a higher position, they believe that they’re better than the rest of us.
I couldn’t bare to take the feeling anymore, so I decided to branch out into other fields and disciplines. Some told me to stay in my lane but others encouraged me to keep going. And now I am mentor to undergraduates at Georgia Southern, and a partner in a few start-ups in various places around the world. I knew my worth and I had made the decision to act on it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Currently, I am the audio director for The Ants Art/Koncept Culture, which is a Baltimore/D.C. clothing company that contains apparel relating to African and Asian culture. I’m a sound designer for Tech Levitate, an innovative company that focuses on technology and gaming. Finally, I am a audio lead for Category Zero Games, working on a current video game project.
But I have worked/conversed with a couple of companies such as: Monroe Institute, Breathwrk, Somadome, Tripp, Cascade Hypnosis. Neeuro, Silentmode, LUCID, Healium, Insight Project (Xbox Games Studios), and OVR.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The best qualities to have is to have an open mind, continue to read and study for your own self benefit, and connect with others. Those qualities will allow for anyone to go very far in life.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
At the moment, the only challenge I’m facing is completing graduate school haha. But so far, everything is going really well.
