We recently connected with Geoffrey Paz and have shared our conversation below.
Geoffrey, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
There are days when I’m getting ready for bed and have no idea if today was a good day or not. That’s when I try to remind myself that I need to be more present the next day and focus on things that inspire me. It can feel that there’s a limited amount of ideas out there and that all the good ones have already been taken leaving you with the scraps of creativity. In reality keeping creativity alive, for me, comes from boredom: sometimes after I’ve scrolled for too long I get that feeling that I want do something or go somewhere and I realize that I’ve been sitting on the couch bored out my mind but keeping myself just distracted enough to not let my mind wander. So whenever I get that hint of a creative spark I chase it and often times find myself of going down one rabbit hole hole or another of finding inspiration.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I run the Music Marketing arm at an agency in Nashville, TN called Innovo. My job revolves around various artists who are usually in the midst of a release cycle for their new projects. Where I come in is when they’re looking to bring on a team to help give structure to their marketing campaigns; that can mean anything from filming and editing short form video content to a more traditional digital campaign involving ad budgets across platforms like Facebook and YouTube. I really enjoy getting to work directly with artists and teams of all sizes and stages in their careers because there are different hurdles to jump over depending on the type of artist I’m working with. I enjoy the balance between the daily creative talks with artists and the strategic approach of releasing multiple songs throughout the year. Every day is different because we don’t limit ourselves to working in one genre but rather want to find the artists that want to put in the time and effort to succeed. We’re excited to be working directly with TikTok as well on influencer campaigns for artists and various initiatives they are launching to help all creators grow and monetize their content.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Staying curious is crucial when wanting to grow professionally and personally, it’s what leads to making mistakes and using what you’ve learned to work smarter and from deeper connections with others. Curiosity often leads to initiative and that is something that can take you a long way professionally, plus it helps you learn things that you might have never known if you didn’t try or ask the question. Along with being curious, something I’m not the best at but I’m trying, is establishing some sort of consistency or routine. This skill is the number one factor in almost any project I take on. That can mean sticking to a calendar or schedule if I’m feeling overwhelmed with workload, carving time out of my day to work on passion projects, taking care of my mental and physical health. A lot of creatives and professionals I admire have this skill down pat in my eyes and I find a lot of inspiration from that. Lastly, an air of optimism can change my day for the better almost instantly. Realizing what I actually have control over and understanding that every decision is not life or death, helps with shrugging off negative feeling or interactions that come with life. The only way to focus on improving these qualities is by being present in the things you do each day.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Taking a break to refocus on whatever is the most important thing in front of me is the best way to get rid of that feeling of being overwhelmed. That and chipping away at things one at a time is how I’m able to dig myself out of piles of tasks that I might have. This doesn’t only apply to my professional life but my personal one too. My advice is to find one thing you can do that might help you start feeling like you have things back under control and just start, try to keep distractions away and soon you’ll find a flow and lose that feeling of paralysis almost.
