Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shayanne Brents. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Shayanne, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I believe I get my strong work ethic from my Grandpa. He has always been such an awesome and inspiring character in my life. Overcoming childhood trauma and severe depression, along with being poor and no college education or support from family. He created from the ground up a very successful BMW workshop in the 80’s in Southern California. He became “The Guy” working on cars for everyone in the valley on, especially high profile celebrities from the time. He worked hard his whole career and always put his family first, despite all the obstacles in his way, he never gave up! I hope to one day carry on his legacy with my own business, given this wonderful trait from an incredible human.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Shayanne Brents, Shy for short. I am from Southern California (shhh don’t tell anyone) but have moved around for most of my adult life. I am a pastry chef by trade for over a decade and a life-long transdisaplinary artist. I have been running my small baking business from my home kitchen now for 8 years, starting as an allergy-friendly vegan bakery (Bleu Moon Bakery) to where I am now, slanging all the custom cakes & treats under Shy Girl Baking Co. Professionally I have always been focused on creating, how can I make your wildest dreams come true, but with sugar, fat, and color. I enjoy being able to transcend ingredients and turn them into something completely new and unique. Being handmade can do that, even with trends. I love being able to put my own spin on things but even more so when I get free reigns of the designs, some of my best works come from there.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Value YOU! Have a sense of self worth in both yourself and your work, especially when it comes to pricing. Make sure you are paid for your time and knowledge/skills/abilities. All these things (KSA’s) are unique to you and what makes you most profitable. Beat them to the “you should charge more”.
Stay motivated! Have a clear goal but also be aware of reality. You have to grind and it’s really tough sometimes, but if you meet the goal in the end the pride alone, is worth it.
Allow rest! The grind most literally and figuratively wears you down. It is worth putting in 24/7 work weeks to meet your goal but you also need to take time for you. Your business, life and self suffer when you are worn down. Listen to your body and be aware of your needs, there is no success without you at your best.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I am facing is finding a balance between the artist in me and the business owner. There are times when I want to go way over the top with my artistic vision but the responsible business owner has to reel it in and become a reminder of reality. It’s creatively exhausting not being able to bring every idea to light and instead cranking out the same thing over and over. At the end of the day this is a business and at times, with custom work comes monotonous repetition due to social media and trends. To please the artist when she is feeling stifled, I take time for my own personal art and activities that inspire and/or bring me joy. During business hours, I try to focus on the process of creating and allow myself to find love in just that.
