Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samahria Richie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Samahria, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My whole life has been a series of events that could have caused me to be on a different trajectory than what I am on today, leaving me helpless and hopeless. From a childhood sexual abuse survivor to a teen domestic violence survivor. I have survived a near attempt on my life, a very serious car accident, I have been rejected for many opportunities as well because I got into trouble when I was a late teen/ early adult and became labeled. Even when you change your life, people do not look at you like you are a changed person, they only see what is on paper. However, I have always been strong-willed and once I put my mind to something, I will find a door, a space, a person, or something that will provide what I need at that moment. I do not stop at the word “NO”, I figure it out. I can not say my resilience comes from one thing but from a combination, of my parents always having faith in me and telling me I can do it, from watching my grandfather overcome challenges and persevere in life until he passed away a few years ago, faith that God is always within me and lastly, my willingness to put in the work, whatever that means in the moment.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about your business before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Two Sisters Maid to Clean is a premium cleaning service that provides residential and commercial cleanings to clients who need to spend their time doing the things that mean the most to them, spending time with family and friends. We create nice clean, neat spaces to improve their overall health and quality of life. Two Sisters Maid to Clean believes in giving back to our community and we provide free cleanings for cancer patients and their caregivers, so they can focus on their healing and recovery.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Compassion, if it isn’t something that comes natural, it can be developed through self work. I think having compassion is a skill that I learned early on in life, I was always the person who people would confide in and talk to, even when I was a small child. This has helped me tremendously in my current career and compassion is one of our company’s core values.
A love for learning, always seek to be better. I love to learn, I read a lot of books, and listen podcasts and spend a lot of resources on education and coaching.
Be coachable, we don’t know everything so be willing to be mentored or coached. My advice for someone who is getting started in any new profession is to immerse yourself in the communities that are available, Facebook has tons of free groups for almost anything. Hire a coach, you can spend a lot of time and money trying to figure it all out on your own or you can just hire someone who has been there already and can help you navigate through it.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was to allow me to navigate life at an early age independently. They did so in a way that at the time, I didn’t always agree with but now that I am older, it is much appreciated. An example would be when I asked my dad a question, he would say look it up, instead of answering it for me. Or, when I wanted my own pager, I had to figure out how to purchase it and then was responsible for paying the bill. Once I started working in high school, I had to pay the water bill. I learned to figure things out at a young age and it has been a huge resource for me on my current journey.
