We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ahmed Abdullah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ahmed , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I’m the youngest of four children, coming from a single Mother household. Growing up I realize the meaning of struggle early on; I watched my mom do all that she could do to provide for myself and my sibling. I remember witnessing her Entreprenurial spirit early on as well. She would do things like sell plates of food, she also started a cleaning service company at one point and then she moved on to buying a box truck and started a moving company which she still runs today. I also remember her battle with drugs as a result of dealing with the amount of pressure she had to endure within our struggles. I think a lot of my ambition as well as my resilience comes from her. She let the drugs go and went back to school and acquired a master’s degree. Watching her hustle and endure so many hardships over the years without giving up, is what inspired me to do better in my life. I was in the streets, making poor decision until seen my mom change her life for the better. When she stopped using drugs and went back to school, it made me want more for myself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
When my mom changed her life around it motivated me to fix mines. So, I left the street activities alone and decided. to work full time and go to school parttime. Before then I had dropped out of school at age 17, this was around the time my mother was turning over a new leaf, she had a long talk with me about my future and said I needed to get things straight. I listened, from there, I then registered. to get my GED at age 17. I passed all my test on the first go around and received it. I then registered for collage at MCTC around the same time my mom was going there. we actually had a couple classes together. She graduated a couple of years before me, and then I graduated in 2014, with an Asociates degree in Business Management. I honestly did not know what my next moves were going to be, I just felt something inside of me that did not want to work for other people. That feeling is what lead me to choose business management as my focus while in college. Once I graduated in 2014, as I was working and going to school, I was also working for my father as his caregiver. While working for my father through different healthcare agencies, I started asking management of those agencies’ questions, in hopes of trying to start my own home healthcare company. I named my agency Tranquility Home Healthcare CO. and registered It through the secretary of state in 2012, long before it was in operation. It was a struggle to start my business to say the least. My application through the state of MN to be a contracted provider had been denied several times for a variety of different small infractions or technical reasons, I chose to never give up on it, or get discourage from the denial letters. This determination trait came from my mother I believe. After about three years of applying and being denied, my application was finally accepted and approved by the state of MN in May of 2015. Once approved, I used my ambition and hit the ground running. Through my journey, I would tell people what I was going to do in the future, people who seemed interested or may want to do business with me in the future, I would save their phone numbers in my phone, so when my approval day came, I reached out to all of the people in my community that I had once spoken to. Thats how I was able to gain my very first clientele and staff members. It is now 2023, and I have been in business for 8 years. I’m also born and raised in the community I serve, I live within the same community today (North Minneapolis) currently, so I know the disparities firsthand. I want people to know that I’m here to help! I share as much knowledge as possible with people who step inside my office or call my office during business hours, even if I cannot service these individuals, I still do all that I can to help their situation out. I grew up in public housing and section 8 properties., In 2021 purchased my 1st investment property, and founded another company called Tranquil Housing CO. I’m proud to say now I own and manage properties in my community, that I rent out to families on section 8 and public housing. I’m not quite sure of what the future holds for me, but whatever my next endeavors may be, I look forward to helping uplift my community and changing the narrative for people who come from where I come from and or look the way I do,

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities or skills that helped me succeed would be, building relationships with the right people, staying focused on my goals and task needed to complete them, and last but not least, I would say staying determined no matter what adversity I faced in life. My advice for those who are early on in their personal journey’s would be to stay positive, stay true to who you are, believe in yourself and never quit or give up no matter the circumstances or your current situation. You may have to outgrow certain relationships in order to meet your goals, you have to be ok with that, because I believe God has a higher purpose for all of us.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking to partner with anyone who’s an entrepreneur or wants to become one but may not know where to start. Through these partnerships I believe we can build bridges and strengthen ties within some of these underserved communities. One person may offer a service or product that another one doesn’t, with that in mind, I don’t mind passing a long information or resource to help further that person’s business and or help service my community. I also don’t mind educating someone who’s interested in entrepreneurship, or someone who wants to become an entrepreneur but might not know where to start. We all need help in life, no one ever came out of the womb self-sufficient. Les get back to the roots of humanity and see how far we can grow from there.
