We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devin Maxwell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being confident in who I am and what I’ve accomplished and learned, is the key navigating in that uncomfortable space.
My college coaches used to tell me “Get comfortable, being uncomfortable in order to overcome all obstacles.”
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The Westside Bears Lacrosse Club is a top-notch organization established in 2019, by a skilled lacrosse player from West LA, who fell in love with the sport in Upstate NY.
We started this club to cultivate proper lacrosse culture and develop great student-athletes, in an area relatively unfamiliar with lacrosse, but heavily populated with youth sports.
Our club represents West Coast players and is committed to promoting their growth at every level. Our highly qualified coaching team, consisting of seasoned professionals with college and professional backgrounds, will ensure that your child is in good hands.
We provide year-round lacrosse opportunities for K-12 players, offering an excellent platform to develop skills and nurture a passion for the game. Our fall skill sessions are scheduled to take place on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00pm at Playa Vista Sports Park, starting on October 4th, 2023, and are guaranteed to be a hit.
All experience levels are welcome to join our fantastic community!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Drive passion
Commitment
Best advice for anyone following their dream: “Believe in it, stand on it. Commit to it. Bet on yourself and blaze your own trail.”
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I think over time there have been many people who have been influential in my growth and development.
All of my coaches throughout my athletic career have taught me things that have made me the coach I am today.
Also, I have been blessed with many great mentors/inspirations: Rory Doucette of Legends, Adam Quinter of Q24 training, and all the crew at Heart and Hustle.
