We recently connected with A Short Walk to Pluto and have shared our conversation below.
A Short Walk to Pluto, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
As a band, we understand that this industry is not an easy one to work in. The music industry is a lot of trial and error, some things stick, and others don’t. The reason we are so optimistic about our future in this industry is the reaction we get from our audience. We put a lot of time and effort into every song we create, and we believe our audience can feel that. We see the impact it is having on listeners from their comments to them sharing our music and in live shows when people sing and dance along. Knowing we have this strong fan base keeps us inspired to continue our work and continue growing as musicians to keep our audience engaged.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We’re a 4-piece band from Toronto, Ontario! We’ve been creating music collectively for about 3 years now, with the band’s inception originating years prior. Max, Danny, and Jake met in high school where they performed rock covers at pep rallies. They began writing originals and performing as a band at local venues in 2018. Emma joined in 2020 after meeting Max through a mutual friend, completing us as a four-piece act and solidifying the face and voice that sits on top of the instrumentation.
We take pride in providing quality musicianship and a unique listening experience to a wide-reaching and loyal audience, one we’ve accrued through our original music, engaging social media content, and energetic live shows. We’re incredibly excited at the prospect of playing new material live for more and more viewers. Although we have around 7 singles released to date, we’re incredibly proud to be releasing our first full-length LP in the coming months, and we’re just as excited to see what the response will be from both current and new listeners!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1 (and arguably the most important) – holding ourselves to a high standard – “Shoot for the moon and you’ll land among the stars”, they say. We try, daily, to improve as musicians, creatives, and entertainers. The standard seems to grow alongside our own individual improvements. The higher the standard we strive for, the greater the quality of our music and live shows become.
2 – open-mindedness – when in a band setting, or really any setting that requires you to work with other creatives, you have to adopt a willingness to try anything. Sometimes the drummer has an idea of what the bass needs to sound like in a certain section of the song, and the bassist has to be willing to work with the drummer to play out what he’s thinking. This is how musicians work together and learn what one another likes to hear in a song.
3 – Enjoy the ride! – Take a second to step back and appreciate what you’ve accomplished (even the little steps!) but don’t lose sight of the bigger picture and keep working towards checking off the next box!
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The four of us are very fortunate to have parents that not only care about our emotional happiness but fully support us in our musical ambitions. Having parents that afford us their love and support while encouraging us to pursue our crafts has been enormously helpful.
