Meet Owen Garrett

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Owen Garrett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Owen, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by stepping out of my comfort zone. Whether that means I’m going to tell new jokes on stage at my comedy show, doing an extra round of sparring at jiujitsu, or switching up my daily routine, I like to live life and enjoy the moment. If something scares me then I HAVE to do it. By pushing the limits, I’ve become comfortable in uncomfortable situations and by saying yes to life, every day is a brand new adventure.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Currently, I’m on tour throughout the Midwest. I’m taking everything that I learned from doing stand up in LA and I’m taking it on the road! I’m going to places where I’ve lived such as Indianapolis, Chicago, Albuquerque, DC and I’m also going to cities that I’ve always wanted to visit like Nashville, New York City, and Detroit. I grew up all over the Midwest, East Coast, and Southwest and it’s my turn to give back to the communities that raised me.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have gotten me to this point are humility, having an open mind, and tenacity. It’s important to be humble and respect others. Every person in this world can teach you lesson if you don’t let your ego get in the way. If you show up consistently and don’t let negative thoughts prevent you from going after your goals then you will get far in anything that you pursue.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that has significantly impacted me was “Why Not You” by Christina Hale aka my Mom. Even if this wasn’t written by the world’s greatest mom, (Which it was!!!), it has really impacted me and enabled me to live a life serving others. Whether that’s part of my day job and helping other’s well being, or my night job and ensuring that people have a wonderful night out at the comedy club, my Mom has instilled within me a sense of pride in serving the community. The true stories and insight that she provides inside of her book are very empowering and inspiring, especially because I’ve witnessed my mother, Christina Hale, exemplify everything that she talks about in her book for my entire life.
