Meet Teju Owoye

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Teju Owoye. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Teju, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
As an entrepreneur, it is important to have optimism. The road to starting and growing a business can be filled with many unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes having an optimistic outlook is the only way to get through. First and foremost, I’ve very fortunate to have grown up in a family where optimism was a core value. On a daily basis, I get my optimism from a general belief that I have agency over my life and I get to chart my own course. If something isn’t going as planned, I believe that I have the power to change how I react to the circumstances, and I have the ability to put a plan into motion to move in another direction. I also try to find the small wins and little joys in life where I can. This helps me to maintain an overall optimistic outlook.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Right now, I’m focused on growing Clean Rebellion, a clean-beauty company focused on creating high-quality personal grooming products.

Our brand started out by focusing on bath and body products, and we’re excited to start expanding into the personal grooming space. All of our products are made without harsh chemicals, additives, parabens, and detergents. We’ll continue our commitment to using high-quality ingredients as we expand our line.

We are thrilled that we were voted as “The Best Multi-Use Body Wash” for the second year in a row by Byrdie (https://www.byrdie.com/best-body-washes-4586438).

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I look back at my journey, I think the three most important skills that were impactful on my journey were:

1. Perseverance: Having perseverance kept me going even when things were tough financially and emotionally. Being able to stick with a goal and see it through is incredibly important.

2. Curiosity: I went from marketing to CPG out of sheer curiosity. I was interested in how body washes were developed and wanted to challenge myself to design a cleaner version of my favorite body wash. Curiosity helps you challenge the status quo, ask important questions, and dream up solutions to problems.

3. Growth-Mindset: Having a growth mindset allows you to always look for opportunities to learn and build on your skillset. Entering the CPG space was tough for me at the beginning—I didn’t know much about how to actually make a product from R&D to production. However, I sought out mentors, books, and courses to help me bridge the knowledge gap.

For people who are early in their journey, I highly recommend seeking out mentors, reading books, and finding courses. I also love the getting into the habit of trying something new everyday to keep you on your toes and out of your comfort zone.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed, the following things help me out:

1. I take a piece of paper and fold in in half. On the left side of the paper, I write down everything that is overwhelming. Then, I give myself twenty minutes to come up with solutions for each issue, which I write down on the right side of the paper. Giving myself a time limit helps me quickly think of solutions, even if they seem silly at first.

2. I meditate and listen to binaural beats.

3. I go for walks in nature, or I take some time to just sit outside and enjoy some fresh air.
