We recently connected with Dane Rauschenberg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dane , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
The best way to develop confidence or self-esteem is by accomplishing something, anything, and then using that to move on to the next thing you wish to accomplish. I have a health self-confidence because I did plenty of small things which lead to medium things which led to large things. Some people see looking at your achievements and thinking you can do more as cocky. They are wrong. As long as you are adequately assessing what you have done and using that to realize you can likely do more, or something similar in a different venue, or something different in a similar venue, that is just confidence built from results.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m best known for racing 52 marathons in 52 consecutive weeks. That is the foot in the door which helped me get an audience for some of my books which allowed me to branch out into the speaking world to implore others to Ignore The Impossible, which is my main idea in life. But I try to be more than that. I am an artist, an entrepreneur, an explorer and a creator. I am also hopefully a lifelong learner, trying to sponge all I can from everything around me to add another title or experience to my life.
This is why I am so excited about the app I am launching called Sherpa. Sherpa is the key to athlete safety and freedom. An app designed to bring athletes together all over the world, Sherpa will afford the opportunity for the fitness-conscious to experience the joy of exercising, safely, in environs both unaccustomed and familiar, by allowing them to book their own personal guide. No longer will unfamiliarity with your own city or the fear of getting lost in a new town keep you from working out, exploring, and getting your sweat on.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Curiosity has been a huge part of the key to my success. Always wanting to learn how things work or how people do what they do has made me a student of everything. A firm belief that I can continue to chip away at an idea or a chore until I can make it into what I want has also been helpful to me. Finally, and something I wish more people would so, is to be completely unbothered about wishing to “prove people wrong”. Do it for you. Prove those who believe in you right. Ignore those who say you can’t. They’ll never cheer for you when you do accomplish what they said you couldn’t and why should you care anyway?
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people to work with. I know there are so many areas I know nothing about and places I have never seen and ideas which haven’t come to me. I want those who have resources and experiences and ideas to approach me with them so we can see what can be created. Most of the time when people say “Do you want to do X?” the X doesn’t matter. I likely want to do it. Now let’s figure out how.
