Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lucas Roy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lucas, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Confidence and Self-esteem don’t happen with the snap of a finger. At times, I still lack both. Like most things in life, confidence and self-esteem are just habits that are built through everyday life. Most of the time confidence comes with practice and experience…the more you practice and the more experience you have, the higher your level of confidence. Self-esteem, I’ve realized, comes down to your unique perception of the world. If you have a negative outlook on the world, chances are you’ll see all the negative things about yourself and it will result in a low self-esteem. on the flip side, if you have a positive view of the world, chances are you’ll be able to achieve a higher self esteem because you see the positives and accept the negatives as part of the world and learn to live with it instead of complaining about it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
A lot of my life & career is focused around helping people through inspiration or action. My primary source of income comes from being the lead singer of a non-traditional wedding & events band. I do a bunch of other stuff as well – I work on a commercial video production & advertising team, as well as run my own audio, video, and photo studio.
That said, most of my time is concentrated on writing songs and developing my skills as a writer. Right now, the thing Im most excited about, is my band debut album “Birthday Party”. We’ve been working on it for about two years and I can not wait to release it and showcase what we’ve been spending our time & pouring our soul into.
The album is psychedelic pop-inspired and is 10 tracks total. The songs are about extraterrestrial life, anxiety, a small amount of love, and being foolish.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
By far the most important skill I’ve learned in life is the ability to influence people’s decisions. The skill of influence is vastly underrated in today’s world – and no I’m not talking about online influencers. I’m talking about people who can persuade & honestly convince people of something that will ultimately benefit everyone in the long run. People are scared of change and what we need to realize is that more often then not, change is necessary. If you can figure out how to convince people of this, you will succeed in almost any environment.
Off of that, empathetic communication is right in line with this skill. Do you usually listen or talk more? Listening is a skill that is not easy. We all want to feel important and that people are listening to what were saying. The truth is, people will value you more if you simply listen.
Singing is ultimately what lead me to learning more about confidence, leadership, and communication.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
Definitely double down on your strengths,
What I’ve learned in my decade of running businesses and bands is that there is always someone out there that is good at what you’re not good at.
Hire them. PAY THEM. watch what happens to your life and career.
I used to waste a ton of time on things that I hated doing and wasn’t good at. Hoping someday I’d get better and that when I got better it would be an area of focus.
It wasn’t. Sure, the knowledge is always valuable and if you want to learn, I definitely encourage it.
But don’t go into it thinking that you’ll all of a sudden care enough to do that task. You probably wont. Lifes about happiness so pick what you’re good at and like doing, and go that route,
