Meet Bevin Hamilton

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bevin Hamilton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Bevin , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
As a singer and an actress, I have encountered many situations in which I am the only one in the room and have been labeled as “unique” or “different”. They have often told me that while they loved my auditions or contributions that they went with someone a little more mainstream or with a different look. I have found that while this may have seemingly at the time cost me roles or opportunities, it has really been a blessing in disguise. I believe that we are all here to share our own unique gifts, energy and talent and that it’s important to do so from our own perspectives and through our own creative visions. Comparing yourself to others is unproductive and ultimately takes you off of your own special path.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a professional singer based out of Los Angeles, CA and I am currently working on my third solo album. I am also prepping to shoot. a music video for my Song “Dominoes” which I released this year. My music ventures through the wilderness of time, questioning the nature of our personal realities. I love exploring archetypes, fantasy, relationships, history and politics.

Due to the SAG and WGA strike, I am currently using my time wisely by writing and storyboarding ideas for scripts and short films. As a director I am currently working with my producing and directing partner Rachael Aune, on a documentary called “Pregnant and Starving” that explores the debilitating disease of pregnancy called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Through the lenses of women’s and their families stories we expose myths, ignorance and neglect by health authorities, the false claims of pharmaceutical companies and we also highlight the courage, resilience and bravery of those women who have suffered, endured and in individual cases lost everything to HG. Our project is being made with all proceeds going to the HER Foundation. The HER Foundation is the global voice of HG Progress. They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides support, groundbreaking research, advocacy, and education on hyperemesis. Since 2000, they are the leading source of information on HG and have helped hundreds of thousands of families across the globe.

Additionally, I completed my first solo film shot entirely on iPhone, at the end of August.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Self-care and self-improvement – Take time to get to know yourself. Explore the world, travel and read. Immerse yourself in things that you enjoy.

Honing my own unique voice, and skillset – Know that rejection is the universe protecting you from what is not meant for you. What is uniquely yours will find you and when it does, things will flow.

Setting boundaries and negotiating my time and energy wisely. – Regularly clean house, check in with yourself and set small goals. It’s okay and healthy to change! I read once that you feel the most resistance when you are breaking through and that is often because others don’t know how to process you changing. Once you push through you can become more authentically yourself!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
At the end of the day, I have been blessed to have many people who have helped me along the way or inspired me to keep going. That said, being in entertainment or the arts can be quite isolating at times and we must develop resilience and a way to stay motivated. Those things ultimately come from you, and that is why knowing yourself is so key to pushing through hard times.
