We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tina Renee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tina , so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
I attribute the vast part of my ability to communicate effectively to my eight 1/2 years of working as a Mediator with the Better Business Bureau. I spent many years communicating with everyone, from doctors to lawyers, and every other industry professional in between. Not only did I verbally assist various companies with their consumer-related complaints, but I also communicated via written correspondence. Working in this role, I learned how to listen well and not just communicate but do so clearly.
I had a desire to become an even more effective communication professional, so I enrolled in college in 2014 and graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Communication in 2017.
I have learned that being an effective communicator is vital both in and out of the workplace. Investing in my growth as an effective communicator has taught me how to clearly translate my intentions and feelings into messages that are easy to understand. In a world where texting is deemed an “effective form of communication”, I have learned that being able to properly communicate cuts down on unintended perceptions that tend to arise because of miscommunication.
Developing my communication skills has helped me to be a great collaborator and team member!
As a full-time entrepreneur, I use all that I have learned while employed as a Mediator with the Better Business Bureau and the skillset obtained when in college to maintain great working relationships with my customers.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a full-time Candle Maker! Being able to create a candle from scratch and having random strangers appreciate it is both an extremely special and rewarding experience. At Whiffs on Wheels, we now offer our mobile candle-making parties to the Southern California region.
We bring our magical candle-making experience to customers of all ages, from the comfort of their very own homes, offices, and personal spaces.
Not only do we venture into the fun world of candle-making, but we also take our customers on an educational voyage into candle-burning safety. Each of our guests leaves their candle-making experience with their very own personalized keepsake certificate and memories to last a lifetime.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Remember to never underprice your products or services just to accommodate someone’s budget. You have to make enough revenue to invest back into your business and to support yourself – Don’t worry, God will send the right type of customer to happily support you.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible is the one book that has played an important role in my development. As a woman of faith, I intentionally seek wisdom on how to carry out my daily affairs. There is no wisdom greater than that of God, so I cling to the Bible for guidance in my spiritual, personal, and business life.
A few of my favorite nuggets from the Bible are:
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. – James 1:5
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. – Proverbs 16:3
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved if you hold fast the word which I preached to you unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. – 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. – Mark 16:16
