We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Billy Bernal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Billy below.
Billy, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I have to tell myself that on the days I don’t have a client I need to work on something related to my business, Whether that’s creating an image for my next promotion, scheduling my posts for the week or booking a client. In order to keep up with my followers I need to make sure every image I am posting shows my clients In their best light. My bread and butter with my social media is my before/after photos and in shooting the right picture I need to take a lot to get just one that will make it to social media. I like to think of myself in the shoes of my client in what they would gravitate towards in a photo. A lot of time and heart goes into my business and this is how I keep my creativity alive, this is what fulfills me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For those who aren’t familiar I am a licensed Permanent Makeup Artist, Which means I have the ok to make people feel gorgeous with cosmetic pigmentation. The most exciting part of my job is I get to enhance peoples faces and make them feel even more confident, beautiful or even handsome! My main area of focus is is Eyebrows, specifically Microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent form of tattooing that utilizes a Manuel blade to etch 3D hair strokes into the brow area creating a natural looking brow. This service in my opinion can benefit anyone those with full brows and others with little to no brow. I would like the readers to know that I work hard on each client to craft their version of a perfect brow. If you were to speak to any one of my clients they would tell you I did just that.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say to someone starting is to practice, practice, practice. You can definitely make a lot of money in this profession and I believe that is why a lot of people get into it. I know a lot of people who were overzealous in the beginning but never succeeded because they didn’t practice. With this business you have to walk before you run consistency is key. On the days that I didn’t have clients I would practice on a banana, apple and orange peels to keep my hand warm and perfect my craft. I also tried really hard to stay in my own lane and not compare myself to other artists that were more skilled than me. The best part of this industry is there is room for everyone. My advice would be to always ask questions, connect with other artists, help those who need direction in this industry. We can all succeed!
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
A big area of growth for myself would be in drawing in a larger male clientele. From the very beginning of my career I wanted to work on male eyebrows. I noticed a hole in the market here in San Diego for “Men’s Microblading” specifically by artists that were men. I wanted to be that guy, I wanted to be BILLY BROWS. I can confidently say that in the last year I have really cornered the market and I am the guy for #guybrows.
