We were lucky to catch up with Santiago Cal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Santiago with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I was born in Belize, Central America, in the 1970’s. It was a vastly underdeveloped country at the time, but peaceful and full of hard workers. They worked hard to progress the country, to gain independence, to become self sustaining, to promote education, and to celebrate the diversity of culture. Work ethic was instilled in me through my family’s actions, as well as those all around me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a sculptor, I create artworks that explore two thematic avenues. The first is, wooden figurative representations that explore introspection, vulnerability, and the “other”. The second is, the use of symbolic objects to address Central American culture and place. The content is derived from personal experiences and perceptions as well as fictitious avenues, such as dreams and storytelling. I have been fortunate to present my artworks in national and inernational galleries, museums, and foundations. I currently have artwork on display at the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, Costa Rica through February of 2024 and will be presenting two exhibitions in Omaha, Nebraska before the end of the year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In hindsight, the three most impactful skills of knowledge have been curiosity, creativity and problem solving. I have always been curious. As a young artist, I did my best to ask questions, listen to those with more experience, and researched the information they provided. I found that this truly expanded my way of thinking and had significant impact on my creativity as well as problem solving.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Art Teachers, high school to gradate school, have been the most helpful, They not only taught me the history and methods of making art, they taught me critical thinking and discourse, provided opportunities to further my knowledge, and encouraged me along the way.
