We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Allon Avgi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Allon, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
I remember that deep desire I had to do well. I still have it, but with a foundation it’s much easier to get further. In the beginning when I didn’t have that foundation it almost felt impossible to get from point A to point B. With help, it becomes a bit more possible, so why not offer that help now that I can? I believe in doing good, both in life and business; if I can figure out how to do more good even after my lifetime that would be a huge accomplishment!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Currently I spend most of my time building my company AVGI. AVGI is a real estate investment shop. We buy properties across the country. Currently we aren’t buying as aggressively as we were. The team has been focused on stabilizing the portfolio and figuring out what our next big move will be. I believe now is the time to be patient with opportunities. They are endless and our most important commodity right this second is time. If we spend time on the wrong opportunities we wont reap the true benefits the market has to offer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have improved my journey are pretty clear cut. 1) Quality: Always be brutally honest. People won’t always love what you have to say, but no one can say that you didn’t say it. I believe that the truth will always set me free. So I’m honest.
2) Skill: Deal making. No question. When I transitioned from trying to earn money everyday into making deals, my portfolio 5x, my relationships 5x, everything shot up.
3) Areas of knowledge: Philosophy. If I could go back to college I would’ve studied so much more of it. Philosophy spells out the nature of our existence. I think it’s beautiful and I know it deeply impacts everyday business.
My advice, keep learning, keep going up the steps. Might not be fast in the beginning but with the right fundamentals in mind and progress, everything compounds.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My parents have been instrumental in my accomplishments. Whether I made it happen, or just fell short, they were always there for me. Knowing that I have people who love me by my side, backing me up emotionally, no matter what happens… that’s all I need. Money comes and goes. Long lasting love, happiness with the people you love, respect through thick and thin, that’s a strong foundation.
