We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jayati Sinha. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jayati below.
Hi Jayati, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My upbringing has a lot to do with the development of my confidence. I’ve always been supported by my family to whatever I have wanted to do and my parents have provided me the resources I needed when I was younger to succeed. Ive always seen them work hard to give our family the best life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
What I do is a bit complicated. My role changes depending on the project I am working on. The best way I can define it is that I am a Connected Products and Spaces Designer. The best part about my job isn’t the product that I deliver but it’s the smile that I see on my client’s face when their hopes and dream finally become a reality and they are genuinely happy about the outcome of the project. Same goes for the non-profit work I do for “The Arc” that works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. If I can help even one person with the privilege, I have gotten that I call life then my life would be worth spent.
I have a background in UI/UX, product, space and furniture design which helps me in visualizing in multiple dimensions, make engaging and tactile outcomes for different use cases. I also understand the front-end/back-end development process which is an asset when developing products for coders/engineers to produce. Additionally, I have a special place in my heart for healthcare and projects where I am able to make even a small difference there are probably my favorite ones.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1.Be open to feedback. That’s probably the biggest thing that has resulted in my growth because it has opened me up to different perspectives and solutions to problems. I used to be very adamant about my solution being THE solution, but I think that’s an immature way of thinking when we are new, young and overly passionate of our work. Being passionate and protective of your ideas is not a bad thing but it could hinder your growth if you keep it too close to you and make that the end all be all solution when there’s so much more you can improve on.
2.Be relevant. I personally have felt that since COVID the world has fast tracked into a lot of new things that are happening and it has become even more important for people to be able to upskill fast and learn new things and adapt to what is needed than to be rigid on your skillset.
3.Be vocal but kind I work at a huge organization where there are so many voices, opinions, and ideas etc and it’s very critical that you voice your opinions/perspective to people otherwise no matter how good you are it’s very hard to be heard. I am aware that actions speak louder than words but in a big organization it’s hard for everybody to have visibility of your work and that’s where being vocal, networking and talking about the work you’ve been doing helps. So, actions first and then words after is a good strategy. And being vocal doesn’t mean you have to be loud and make other people feel less than. You can be kind and still share your perspective.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
In my opinion it’s not either-or answer. I think you need to first self-reflect on whether there are actionable steps you can take to work on our weaknesses or not. And if there are things you can do then do you truly want to? Does that interest you? The biggest thing is to be honest with the people you work with. There are things that I don’t care about and putting efforts in improving them is not worth my time, and there are things that I am not knowledgeable about, but I want to be and they are very relevant to my surroundings, are interesting so I put efforts in getting better at it. It’s so circumstantial.
