We were lucky to catch up with Erica Sutton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erica, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I can keep going because I keep a positive mindset no matter what. I block out negativity. No one can do what you do, how you do it. I constantly remind myself that I am a limited edition. There’s only one me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a professional makeup artist located in Jackson, MS. I’ve been in this creative field for over 15 years. My business is DeSu Artistry named after my late grandmother, Della King Sutton. I made sure the name paid homage to her as well as fit what I can do creatively thus the Artistry part. I am a Jill of all trades. The thing that excites me the most about my work is seeing people’s reactions to their looks. Uplifting and making people feel good and look good makes it all worth it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As much as I didn’t want to attend college, I’m grateful for going and finishing. My Graphic Design degree helped me with advertising, being able to have an artistic eye, photography and so much more. Being able to take constructive criticism is an important skill I have. This allowed and still allows me to perfect my craft. Having an open mind also is a quality that has opened many doors for me. You have to sometimes be willing to be pushed out of your comfort zone. The best advice I can give to someone early in their journey is never to give up and always find a way to make time for your craft. Be open to learning from others and be kind but professional.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Believe in me. I get my strong will, drive, and hustle mentality from my dad. I get my strength, professionalism, and organization from my mom. They have been my biggest supporters whether it’s been moving to different states to major art shows down to my crazy artistic ideas and projects. Even though they only show strength around me, I get to see a softer side when they help others. This is something that was passed on to me. Treat people how you want to be treated. Give out good and good will always come back to you. All of this wrapped up into one is the most impactful thing they have ever done for me.
