We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexx Calise. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexx below.
Alexx, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’d say that my work ethic comes from my parents. They always told me that I had to work hard for the things that I wanted in life. I’ve been working since I was 12 years old. When you work hard for something, the results are so much greater. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of earning or accomplishing something for yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
First and foremost, I am a musician (but I also have a lot of other creative interests, like photography and writing). I’ve had the great pleasure of working with so many other amazing musicians and producers, placed a ton of songs in film and TV, and performed all over the country. I have a solo project, a band with my best friend/songwriting partner Dennis Morehouse (which is called Batfarm), and a licensing project with musician Rob Johnson.
Additionally, I’ve acted in a plethora of commercials, written for a variety of major publications/brands such as Guitar Girl, Bass Musician, Music Connection, Positive Grid, etc., had a variety of music industry-related jobs for companies such as Guitar World, Roswell Pro Audio and GHS Strings, and I’m currently one of the photographers for Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say that my tenacity, fearlessness, and business acumen have greatly impacted my journey.
My advice would be to learn your craft as best as you can so that you can approach people with confidence when you go to pitch/promote your project(s). Develop your social skills as best as you can, because this business is built on relationships. Ask questions of those who are better at something than you. Ask for the things you want (in both life and career). If you don’t, you’ll never know what could have been. Never stop learning and never stop growing.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
While I’m always striving to be the best I can be, I’ve been focusing really closely on my health for the past few months. I’ve been eating really cleanly (aside from a cheat meal or two a week), I’ve ramped up my exercise routine even more, and I’ve been trying to get better sleep. Of course, it’s nice to look better, but I also want to feel better, because that really affects everything. Since I’ve been on this path, I’ve seen noticeable positive changes in my emotional health as well as my physical. I plan to keep this going for the foreseeable future.
