Meet Laura McCann

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura McCann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Laura, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
From an early age I was driven by a desire to self express. A child actress, I started on the stage, and progressed to film and commercials when I was seven years old. By the time I was sixteen, my family moved to France and I landed a lead in a film that catapulted me onto movie screens and on the pages of magazines. I quickly learned I didn’t have the desire to be a product. Instead I moved back to the US, got accepted to Parsons School of Design in NY and then spent twenty years in fashion as a designer and entrepreneur. I learned how to develop products for many brands and honed my skills as a CEO. My purpose has always been to tap into my possibilities for the greatest personal growth which basically means, I’ve spent the last thirty years learning to adore myself! Now I share that journey at my brand Adoratherapy, a leader in the aromatherapy and clean beauty industry.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Every day is different, and every day is demanding. Over the years I’ve trained myself to perform at a pace that most would find overwhelming. For me, reaching a level where I could contain “more” has been a goal.

From learning we’ve received a Cleancert award for Best Perfume, to being nominated for Asheville’s Chamber of Commerce’s Woman’s Up awards, the glory isn’t in moments of recognition, although those are great, it’s making a difference in people’s lives that really keeps me motivated.

In our store, where I spend as much time as possible, I’ve been able to truly understand why what we do matters enough to keep investing time, money and soul into the business: our customers tell us we change their lives with our approach to healing the body, mind and spirit with aura and chakra readings and aromatherapy,

We recently introduced our Room Boost candles. I created five beautiful scents that amplify the intention for creating spaces that heal. Our Room Boost Aura sprays are extremely popular so interpreting them into candles was a fun project: Passion, Blissful, Clear Away, Serene and Abundance express our greatest desire to uplift, captivate, purify and release. A candle should not just have a catchy name or trendy scent. Our approach is to match each fragrance with an affirmation and turn candle lighting into acts of self care and self love.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Courage, curiosity and compassion!

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I have a vision for the business that requires more capital, more people, more time focused on the business exactly at a time where I also desire a different approach to success, one in which success is defined as a right sized business which is hard to explain- but basically means, growth is calibrated to what the business wants to become, not what I want it to become.

I’m listening, like a “business-whisperer “. The challenge is and always will be: me. Entrepreneurship is a mirror to our souls purpose. My job is to remain present and ready to engage, courageous, curious and compassionate.
